Green is a very vivid writer, enjoyable
By Gregory D. Watts
"There Comes a Time -A Science Fiction Collection" by: J.J. Green
Okay, first I gave this an over all 4 star review. I went back & forth between 4 & 5. So why back & forth?
I would have given it 5 if I had not been able to predict where 2 of the stories were going. But I read them anyway because Green is a vivid writer. I will break down my review by stories without giving up the ending.
1) There Comes a Time: Time travel stories are both difficult to read and write. I have been working on one for years but it's not moving forward because of the chicken & egg issue. That is at the very heart of the 1st story, a great story to open with by the way. It drew me in. In fact I read it right before falling alseep and was so frustrated I dreamed about it. Green did a marvelous job with the complexity of presenting a problem in time travel.
2) Ice Dreamer: I have always told my friends and family there would be people like Dave Hepplethwaite in a perfect world. This story was well written and ended well. There will always be a Dave.
3 & 4) Tread Lightly & Robot Relations: These 2 stories I figured out almost from the opening paragraph. Why? In Tread Lightly too much information was revealed early on. As soon as I saw what kind of "war" the protagonist was in I guessed the rest. I even guessed what he was growing. But as I said Green is a good writer so I finished it with joy. Also Green may not be too far from fact in this one. I had also figured out Robot Relations, from the title. In this case the title was too much information. I finished the story, but without any Ah at the end.
5) What Poppa Pills Did For Me: The story is not about Poppa Pils at all, and this plot point has really been beat into the ground in Sci-Fi. Even Star Trek in 1966 did several stories on this. So not my favorite.
6) Why I Choose Him: This was a good story & had some unexpected surprises. I was really drawn into this account.
7) The Last Days of Duane Dayton: I could not read beyond the 1st paragraph. Not because of the story, but because of my dad. Green describes Dayton murdering soneone. When I was 6 I watched my dad do that to my mom. I was able to stop him, but later he took me with him when he did succeed doing it to my 2nd step-mom. He attempted also with my 1st step-mom. In all Doc (my dad) did it successfully to 2 women. So I could not read it. I published my story under DeWayne Watts in a book here on Amazon called "David's mark".
8) Breathing Space: This was werid. I read it and enjoyed it, but, well I felt as if I had been dropped from a ledge in a dark cave. The ending was not so great.
9) Red Ochre: Althouh it was close to the end before I knew what he would find in his pocket, this was still a pleasent story. I enjoyed it.
10) Return of the Prodigals: A great lesson in hate. I DID enjoy how this most difficult subject was presented. Props to Green on this one.
11) Never in Fear Fly to the Woods: I could not get "into" this one. I was quickly lost, but may give it another go. There was something that did bother me. I know coincidence can occur, but sometimes the way an author uses certain words...well "the wood"? In 2014 I published my psychological thriller "The Book in The Wood", prior to that in 2013 I used social media to "coin" the phrase "the wood" and had to explain what it met. In this last story Green uses that same phrase to describe "the woods" or "the wood". I do give it to coincidence, but it was a put off. This one is on me, not Green.
Overall Green is a good author and for someone wanting good short stories I suggest this book. At some points Green reminded me of Stephen King. I will consider reading Green's other novels & shorts. Buying this book is a safe and enjoyable purchase. And just because I did not like a certain story does not mean you will not.

I bought this anthology thinking I would pick at it over time. I found myself so intrigued by the stories that I ended up reading it over just two days. And the last story, well, that left me a bit lost for words. Definitely worth the cost.

Diverse collection
By Ron Baker
As with most anthologies there is a mix of good and mediocre. I appreciate that they are mostly original idea's and all have a touch of bizarre in them. One story "The Last Days of Duane Dayton" has an intriguing take on punishment in the near future age of advanced technology. Some of these I didn't really get.
I do recommend this collection. What I like about anthologies is if there is a story that doesn't resonate with me I don't have a lot of time invested in it and another tale is coming right up. This is diverse enough that you are sure to find a couple that you like, perhaps more that a couple..
