Review

"Robert Clews’ Project Finance for the International Petroleum Industry fills a significant gap in project-finance literature for both the academic and professional reader. Highly recommended. " --E.R. Yescombe, YCL Consulting Ltd., UK

"The oil and gas industry is a capital intensive industry that carries very high risks in the upstream part of the value chain. The many companies involved in the upstream sector use a wide range of financial structures. Therefore, understanding how each company can finance its participation in projects and with what associated risks and costs is fundamental to the understanding of the issues at stake."  --Nadine Bret-Rouzaut, IFP School, France

"Understanding different financial structures can be as important for the success of projects in the international petroleum industry as understanding physical structures and processes. This volume should help the interested reader make progress along the path towards such an understanding and to a greater awareness of many of the intricacies of project finance."  --David Mayston, University of York, UK

"As experienced project finance professionals know, each sector has unique characteristics that must be take into account. Most books about energy finance emphasize financing at the expense of industry economics. In contrast, Robert Clews does a masterful job at tying together the features of oil and gas investments with the risk management and contract structures of energy project finance. During a time of dramatic changes in energy markets, this book sets the new standard for the analysis of structured finance during a period of dramatic change in energy markets."  --John S. Strong, College of William and Mary, USA

Children Are Diamonds: An African Apocalypse, by Edward Hoagland

This is not the Africa of Isak Dinesen, nor the Africa of Joy Adamson. This is the Africa of civil wars and tribal massacres, where the Lord’s Resistance Army recruits child-soldiers after forcing them to kill their parents and eat their hearts. The aid workers who voluntarily subject themselves to life here are a breed of their own.

Meet Hickey, an American school teacher in his late thirties, an American school teacher who burns his bridges with the school board and goes to Africa as an aid worker. Working for an agency in Nairobi, one of his jobs is to drive food and medical supplies to Southern Sudan to an aid station run by Ruth, a middle-aged woman, who acts as nurse, doctor, hospice worker, feeder of starving children, and witness. Ruth is gruff but efficient, and Hickey, who is usually drawn to youth and beauty, is struck by her devotion. Returning to Nairobi, he can’t forget what he has seen.

When the violence and chaos in the region increase to a fever pitch and aid workers are being slaughtered or evacuated, Hickey is asked to save Ruth overland by Jeep. What happens to them and the children that have joined their journey is the searing climax of this novel. Hoagland paints an unflinching portrait of a living hell at its worst, and yet amid that suffering there is hope in the form of humility, sacrifice, and life-affirming friendship.

From Booklist
Revered for his essays, most recently collected in Sex and the River Styx (2011), Hoagland is also an intrepid fiction writer. In his newest novel, a work of throttling intensity, he draws on his extensive sojourns in Africa to portray Hickey, an American schoolteacher improvising a “knockabout” life as a “guide, ne’er-do-well, aid worker, what-have-you” in central Africa. A pragmatist, Hickey smuggles diamonds and gold as he tries to help destitute people starving in the vise of civil war and brutality beyond comprehension. Tough and impish Ruth Parker runs an isolated, overwhelmed clinic and refuses to give up even after being abducted and possibly raped. The two reach out warily to each other within the maelstrom of famine, torture, genocide, disease, and corruption, struggling to rescue a group of traumatized and doomed children against surreal adversity. The ferocious lucidity of Hoagland’s language and the depth of his characters as they navigate political complexity, hellish violence, endless fear, persistent desire, and desperate calculations of survival make for a shattering tale of epic suffering, bitter irony, and miraculous flashes of beauty. --Donna Seaman

Review

“The ferocious lucidity of Hoagland’s language and the depth of his characters as they navigate political complexity, hellish violence, endless fear, persistent desire, and desperate calculations of survival make for a shattering tale of epic suffering, bitter irony, and miraculous flashes of beauty.”—Booklist

“A gritty cinematic story wrapped in brilliant African detail, mesmerizing, from the unforgettable opening scene, on to the end. Quite simply, a masterpiece.”—Garrison Keillor

“Edward Hoagland has long been both a resolute explorer and a preternaturally versatile writer. He’s written more nonfiction than fiction, but what he brings to this terrifying novel—I mean, in addition to his humane vision and exquisite craft—is everything he has learned (as Graham Greene learned) from the world. The range and depth of Hoagland’s travel books, and of his many remarkable essays, are on display in this novel set in Africa, where killing and sexual brutality are juxtaposed with humanitarian care. Hoagland’s aid workers are damaged souls, but they haven’t quit. In a world of unbearable inhumanity, what comes across in this intrepid novel is the power of doing the right thing—even, or especially, in a moral outback.”—John Irving

“Children Are Diamonds is the latest addition to a remarkable collection of books about the war in southern Sudan that evokes the time and place with haunting imagery. Hoagland aptly captures the lives of Western do-gooders and opportunists lured by the adrenaline rush of Africa, evoking the closeness, and the randomness, of death in a war zone.”—New York Times

A devastating novel of the African Apocalypse
By Vermonter
This novel will stay with me a long while. Set in 1995, the story concerns the interaction of a failed New Hampshire teacher working for a small NGO and the multiple and complex ethnic and sectarian fault lines in Central Africa. With vivid and sickening violence and disregard for human life by tribes and governments, the book is not an easy read; definitely not a beach novel. In fact, several times I had to remind myself I was reading a novel and not a memoir.

What is really sad is the fact that in 2013, almost 20 years later the same situations and individuals are still causing hardships and destruction. South Sudan (Juba) is now an independent nation, but the LRA is still horrendous, the regime in Sudan is still slaughtering its own people, famine is still endemic to the region due to political agendas, the SPLA is still fighting and the tribes are still killing over cattle and land. The great powers are still using aid and weapons to support their geopolitical games. Children are still the victims.

However, Edward Hoagland has written a novel as much about a flawed human being as he has a historical situation. The main character Hickey loves children and risks his life to save them from refugee camps and warfare. But he also paternalistically uses poor and striving African women for his own pleasures throughout. There is no simple answers in this book--for example, are NGO's prolonging the violence by feeding and providing medicine to both (all?) sides of the conflict?

I recommend this novel highly, but a quick peek at Wikopedia to get the background of the situation and a good Central African map would help.

Well worth reading....
By Andrew Mendelssohn
I discovered Children are Diamonds after reading a review of the book; I bought the book expecting another stereotyped softened version of Africa. Much to my shock, the book proved to be something much deeper, and for that reason, much more effective than anything I expected.
I won't rehash the plot except to say that it is a first person narrative done by an occasional aide worker (and otherwise ne'er do well, to quote our narrator) who, over the course of the book, undertakes three trips to southern Sudan (now South Sudan) for a second tier relief agency. The events of the book take place in 1995 and are largely accurate. Our protagonist starts his narrative seemingly numb, but by the end of the book his heart is partially broken, and so are the readers'. This isn't a book for the squeamish, especially the last chapter: the images are harsh, and so are the decisions that Hoagland's characters face.
A few last comments: I found Hoagland's writing style difficult at first. He prefers both long, run-on sentences and even longer paragraphs. He also has a depth of knowledge about Africa and the Sudan that requires the reader to know a significant amount of historical background info to fully enjoy the nuances of the book. Nevertheless, this is a book that rewards the dedicated reader. I hope the book gains a wider audience.

"Disasters here can swallow you in Africa, and the disasters, too, get swallowed up, which may be why we Rolling Stones fool the
By Amelia Gremelspacher
This quote answers one of my most difficult questions. How do these people continue to face the enormity of the daily emergency of Africa. Each child you help has left another crowd of children not to be saved. A shattering scene involves our narrator being tasked by his would be lover, Ruth, to pick a patient to drive with him to Nairobi. Too attractive, and a girl might be grabbed for rape. Too strong, and a man may be drafted. But the weak and the profoundly ill will not survive, better a place for just the right child. In this case it is the deeply likable, wall-eyed YaYa.

The author has masterfully resisted the temptation to arrange the action in a straight column. He allows us to waver in the mad fate that surviving a day requires, yet he saves us just short of utter despair. For a certain type of oerson, the mud and the chaos weaves a type of awful home that is not able to be escaped. These people are not saints; they are wounded healers. Many of them are dilettantes, risk seekers, competitive aid workers. In answering the question , "why try here", the writing drew me in to the point that I was literally startled to still be warm, fed, and safe when I looked up.

Hoagland 's writing enmeshes the reader into the world where nothing works and discord burns across whole peoples. Yet it is not repellant. It is a challenge to start to even glimpse what it takes to understand Africa, and to wonder rather, "Why haven't I tried.?" This isn't a book to be missed. This author has captured a corner of our world which needs to be seen.

Introduction to Broadband Communication Systems, by Cajetan M. Akujuobi, Matthew N.O. Sadiku

Broadband networks, such as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), frame relay, and leased lines, allow us to easily access multimedia services (data, voice, and video) in one package. Exploring why broadband networks are important in modern-day telecommunications, Introduction to Broadband Communication Systems covers the concepts and components of both standard and emerging broadband communication network systems.

After introducing the fundamental concepts of broadband communication systems, the book discusses Internet-based networks, such as intranets and extranets. It then addresses the networking technologies of X.25 and frame relay, fiber channels, a synchronous optical network (SONET), a virtual private network (VPN), an integrated service digital network (ISDN), broadband ISDN (B-ISDN), and ATM. The authors also cover access networks, including digital subscriber lines (DSL), cable modems, and passive optical networks, as well as explore wireless networks, such as wireless data services, personal communications services (PCS), and satellite communications. The book concludes with chapters on network management, network security, and network testing, fault tolerance, and analysis.

With up-to-date, detailed information on the state-of-the-art technology in broadband communication systems, this resource illustrates how some networks have the potential of eventually replacing traditional dial-up Internet. Requiring only a general knowledge of communication systems theory, the text is suitable for a one- or two-semester course for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in engineering as well as for short seminars on broadband communication systems.

From School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-A beastly boy gets his comeuppance, partially due to his own efforts, and partially thanks to that wily old elf, Santa Claus. Bradley Bartleby starts out bad (at birth, he stole the doctor's stethoscope), and gets worse as he gets older. His wealthy, overindulgent, and frankly terrified parents give in to his every whim, but Santa thwarts him every Christmas with a token pair of socks. Bradley plots hideous revenge, but Santa (unseen except in Bradley's imagination through the entire book) gets the last word with his well-considered holiday gift. Bernatene's digital mixed-media illustrations are a perfectly creepy fit to this unusual holiday tale. There's no telling whether or not Santa's intervention will change Bradley's evil ways, and some might find this budding fiend more than a little disturbing, but fans of the Addams Family and Emily the Strange shenanigans might appreciate the dark humor.-Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Libraryα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist
British bad boy Bradley Bartleby is a spoiled brat who wants to wring Santa for any and all goodies. This tale of one boy’s mean-spirited attempts to get more than he is offered takes predictable turns, as Bradley manages to estrange those nearest to him with his thankless greed, becoming increasingly aggressive. Of course, his best-laid plans to waylay Santa backfire, and he himself is caught in the trap—while Santa gets sweet vengeance. Bernatene’s bright, cartoony paintings offer proportions and distortions reminiscent of animated features like Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. Bradley’s cunning is fairly monotone, but his expressions and contrivances are delightful to examine. A solid find for readers more comfortable with videos than with stories on pages. Grades 2-4. --Francisca Goldsmith

Review
"This funny, beautifully illustrated story will have you talking about the importance of "being good for goodness' sake."
THE WASHINGTON POST

STARRED REVIEW …hilarious, bizarre holiday story… The cleverly constructed plot unfolds with perfect comedic timing and dry wit, complemented by digitally produced mixed-media illustrations that have a suitably sinister, magnetic charm…Naughty. But nice. --Kirkus Reviews, starred review, Sept. 1, 2012

STARRED REVIEW ...Bernatene s cinematic mixed-media illustrations work wicked magic with Emmett s darkly comedic prose, as Bradley s plans backfire explosively. An ideal Christmas present for children who prefer Halloween. --Publishers Weekly, starred review, Sept 10, 2012

Bradley Bartleby is a menace he d been born bad. As his antics grow worse throughout the years, his parents cater to him ( because they were terrified ), but Santa does not: every Christmas Bradley receives only socks from jolly Saint Nick. So Bradley hatches a plan to capture Santa using an absurdly intricate trap that includes dynamite, vicious tigers, a guillotine, and more and make sure the fat fool gets exactly what he deserves. In a humorous twist ending, it s Bradley who s served his comeuppance (and another pair of socks). Bernatene s digital illustrations bring the troublemaker s beastliness to life in this cautionary tale disguised as a holiday romp. --Horn Book, November/December 2012

Brilliant Christmas Book for Boys
By PJgamers
I grabbed this book to read to my son's class at school. He wanted a book that was a "boy" book. This totally worked. It is hilarious!! The whole class (elementary school) LOVED it! They were all smart enough to know that the boy was being naughty and that you really shouldn't try to trap Santa with Bombs and Bengal Tigers. The illustrations are captivating and amazing. The kids wanted to read it again and again. This is a story they won't get sick of. The girls laughed just as hard as the boys. Kudos to the author on a great book.

the best guide to Jordan
By Kabo
For a recent trip to Jordan I bought all the guidebooks I could find in bookstores, and this one is, by far, the best. Not only does it provide all the necessary, utilitarian information, but it provides great background reading on the history and culture of the country. Much better than the other available books, especially the Lonely Planet.

There was very little we saw that wasn't extensively and well covered. The author has clearly spent a great deal of time living and travelling through Jordan.

The recommendations for Amman and the most notorious tourist destinations (Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea, Jerash) are uniformly accurate, clear, and useful, but the book also offers plenty of information about less obvious destinations - e.g. small towns along the main roads, always suggesting a good place to stop and have a snack and giving interesting historical details.

This is not only a practical and useful guidebook, but also an essential reference on Jordan for those willing to read or explore more. Very highly recommended.

Indispensable
By Ian Hutchison
This book is practical and well organized and has tons of great maps in it. Jordan was my favorite travel experience out of the 12 countries I've visited.

I just got back from a nine day trip in Jordan. My friend and I went to Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, Amman, Madaba, Umm Qais, Jerash, and Ajlun. This guidebook is so accurate and thorough - it made the trip a breeze. The section on language was a blessing, including the great section on foods and drinks in Jordan. All the cultural tips were helpful and accurate (girls AND guys - cover your legs and arms like the locals!), and the extensive sections on the history of Jordan and Petra were insightful. Many prices have increased since this was published. For example, entry visa is now JD20 instead of JD10 (about $28). But overall, travel in Jordan is cheaper than travel in America, and much cheaper than travel Europe. There's also info in here for booking a tour with a company, probably a lot easier than connecting the dots yourself like we did.

I would add a few tips that I didn't see in the book: be aware that many vendors won't have change for large bills, so always have some 1s and 5s with you. Also, in the book, some of the information about buses was misleading; we got stuck at the dead sea at 4pm on a Saturday with no buses in sight, contrary to the impression we got from the guidebook. However, EVERYONE in Jordan is so helpful, and we were able to hitch a ride back to West Amman with a tour group, and then the tour guide drove in his own car us back to our hotel in downtown Amman. If you're going to be taking buses, check with the staff at your hotel to confirm what the guidebook recommends. Every other bus we took was fine though. In Amman, we took private taxis to the bus stations instead of the white, shared cabs. It was not very expensive, and was less stressful than trying to figure out the stops/routes of the shared cabs. In general, buses run more in the morning than in the afternoon or evening.

My friend and I are active hikers from Colorado, and we loved Petra and Wadi Rum most of all. The stars at night in Wadi Rum made the whole trip for me - breathtaking. In both these places, the more you can walk in a day, the more you'll see, so make sure you're in shape before you go, and bring good shoes and thick socks. I'd say ideally you need three days in Petra; we had two FULL days of hiking and didn't see it all. We did the night tour of Petra, which honestly I wouldn't do again (search google images for "petra night" and you'll get the idea). After a full day of hiking, walking all the way back into Petra in the cold night wasn't fun, and when the group arrived at the treasury, everyone's camera flashes really killed the vibe. Petra is filled with vendors who sell trinkets VERY aggressively, so brace yourself for constant offers of donkey and camel rides and cheap jewelry.

Traveling in the Middle East takes more preparation than Europe. If you're thinking about going to Jordan, get this guide book and read it months before you go; you'll be glad you did. I'd also recommend getting some free Arabic podcasts off itunes. My favorite was a small series by the Peace Corps for volunteers in Jordan. It had all the important phrases, and with Jordanian dialect and accent. Watch out for Arabic podcasts geared towards Morocco; the language is very different there. I also read the books "Married to a Bedouin" and "Live from Jordan" before I went. Both great books that informed my view of the country and it's people.

A tip: from downtown Amman, you can hike up the hill (stairs between houses) to the Citadel and sneak in without paying at the entrance. The views at the top are killer, and it's fun to see the ancient ruins juxtaposed with the bustling city. Also, locals hang out up there in the evening (it's probably the only parkland/open-space in that part of town). We ended up there at sunset and all around us were locals, kids playing soccer, women picnicking, families taking photos. We felt so special to be up there; we were the only tourists around.

I cannot say enough how kind people were to us. Everywhere we went people offered us tea. I got a haircut one day in Madaba, and they insisted I not pay and brought us tea and gave us bread and nuts and we hung out - such a memory. One of our favorite drinks was "lemon juice" with mint mixed in. So good! Many menus were in English, and most service industry folks knew enough english to help us out.

My personal recommendations, in order: Petra, Wadi Rum, Dead Sea, Jerash. I'd say plan a few days for Petra and a few for Wadi Rum. Plan on half a day for the Dead Sea, most of a day for Jerash (eat at the Lebanese house! So good!). Amman is a hectic city. My friend and I loved it, but many casual travelers hate it. The guidebook suggests basing yourself in Madaba if you want a more mellow time. besides, it's closer to the airport than Amman.

The three hotels we stayed at, which I recommend: Burj al Arab in Amman, Cleopetra in Wadi Musa (Petra), Mariam in Madaba. Our guide in Wadi Rum was Mzied Atieg; he was awesome.

Another great thing about our trip: we met many wonderful travelers from Europe and America. Being in such a special place, travelers were very open to spending time with us and talking about their travels. We met such wonderful folks, and we compared notes about where we'd stayed, what we'd done, what else we were going to do on our trip.

In conclusion, if you're thinking about traveling to Jordan, get this book!

I would add; check current news in Jordan before committing to visit. Two protestors died in Amman the day we left. Sobering and scary. However, in our travels we encountered no troubles or tension, and everyone was kind to us, and they continued to be kind to us after we told them we were from America. Most Jordanians don't like American foreign policy, but they like Americans just fine.

Excellent!!
By James
This is more my style of guide book!! Excellent background information on archeological sites around Jordan with (considering it's a guide book) great info on Petra! Everything from the King's Highway to Wadi Rum is covered in thoughtful detail by an author who obviously did his homework. This book really sparks your interest in going to Jordan, and introduces the Bedouin and mainstream Jordanian culture to the reader well. Border crossings, visas, food, health, transportation... it's all in here. LP and Let's Go guides should learn a thing or two from this guide! It doesn't bog itself down with useless information like some other guide books do. Going to Jordan? Get this first!

Review
"...all I can say is that the book is blessed with an easy-going, but ultra-clear, style of writing. Carrie Anne Philbin has created a beautiful book that deserves a place on any Pi owners bookshelf. There's only one score I can give to this book: 10/10." (Raspberry Pi Pod, February 2014) " Adventures in Raspberry Pi slowly builds up the difficulty, constantly challenging the newcomer to learn more and improve on their skills and that's what makes it such an excellent book for teachers, kids, parents or just non-technical humans who want to learn a bit." Excellent collection of Raspberry Pi "teachables"
By Douglas R. Henry
I teach computers to 3rd-8th graders. As our STEM effort, we do Scratch and (of course) Minecraft. This book caught my eye because it unites these with a cool, inexpensive hardware component (the Pi) as well as introductory Python and Turtle programming. Kids at this level can benefit most from a smorgasbord of brief introductory activities that hold their interest, rather than an in-depth programming or robotics course. This book is a great collection of entrees for just that purpose.

The perfect companion for anyone wanting to get started with Raspberry Pi
By K. Wilkens
I've had a Raspberry Pi for awhile now, but have been kind of at a loss on what do to with it. I initially got it set up following Carrie Anne's excellent video tutorials. I've found her Adventures in Raspberry Pi to be just the catalyst I needed to start trying out new things with my Raspberry Pi. I like that each adventure/chapter provides self-contained activities that include not only detailed instructions, but easy to understand definitions and hints for further explorations. I also appreciate how computer science concepts are introduced as they relate to the project and not the other way around. There are also very helpful video tutorials available for each project. While geared toward young people, this book is really the perfect companion for anyone wanting to get started with Raspberry Pi.

An Excellent Introduction to the Raspberry Pi
By Gene Williams
I have examined several books (selected on the basis of described content and Amazon.com ratings) that deal with the Raspberry Pi and, in my opinion, Philbin's book is clearly the best for a beginner. She writes in a direct clear-cut style and the book has excellent full-color diagrams. While it may be aimed at 11- to 15-year-old students, the book would serve equally well for adults. With nine "adventures", the author covers just about everything that you might hope for in a logical and progressive fashion.

More about the "adventures":
#1 -- Introduces the Pi and describes how to get it up an running in various ways, including the up-to-date NOOBS.
#2 -- Summarizes the basics of Linux in an easy-to-follow set of instructions.
#3 -- Introduces programming concepts with Scratch by making an adventure game.
#4 -- With a fun graphics project, the author makes a clever transition from Scratch to Python .
#5 -- Significant programming with Python -- again, with an adventure game. The author wisely (I think) uses Python 3.
#6 -- Minecraft on the Pi and Python programming applied to Minecraft.
#7 -- Coding music with Sonic Pi.
#8 -- Using the general purpose input/output (GPIO) pins on the Pi -- the Python library that controls GPIO pins.
#9 --The Big Adventure -- building a Pi jukebox using an LCD screen, MP3 music files, and GPIO button controls.

It is a great sequence that could be adapted by a teacher for use at several grade levels -- and it would certainly appeal to a young person or an adult working solo.

Although the book is well-illustrated, the publisher's web site for the book also provides a set of videos that cover each adventure. I found these very useful.

For anyone interested in further pursuits with possible electronics projects, this book gives a good background and the author provides links to web sites for tutorials on using the GPIO pins, how they can be controlled even with Scratch programming, and possible electronics projects.

I generally prefer not to comment on the input from other reviewers but, in this case, I feel that the reviewer who was troubled by the fact that the author failed to emphasize proper indenting was certainly correct in noting that but, certainly, was quite severe in rating this otherwise excellent book with one star on that basis. Proper indenting and white space are both important in writing good functional code but, of course, the IDLE 3 environment generally does this for you and so it wouldn't be much of an issue for someone using this book.
