As gimmicks go, it’s a good one: each month of 2010, one title in the 12-book Conspiracy 365 series will be released. The ticking clock (or calendar, in this case) is introduced immediately when a strange man accosts 15-year-old Callum Ormond on the street, shouting, “Get away! Hide and lay low until midnight December 31st of next year.” It’s good advice, because the following day, January 1st, includes a boat wreck, shark attack, and helicopter rescue—and that’s just for starters. Soon Callum is fleeing unknown assailants who are framing him for the attack of his little sister and uncle Rafe (a shady character himself). It all has to do with something called the Ormond Singularity and a group of sketches Callum’s father gave him before dying of a mysterious illness. This is the kind of stuff that stretches credibility with every page, but continual time updates (“12:00 a.m.,” “12:13 a.m.,” etc.) at least create a sense of continual motion. The conclusion offers no answers, just the requisite cliff-hanger. Grades 4-6. --Daniel Kraus

those devastating words, he must uncover the mysterious
history of his family and do so by using the few clues his
father left behind. Now being framed for a crime he didn't
commit, Callum is the most wanted fugitive and not just by
the authorities. While Callum races against time to
uncover the secret, he must also be aware of the people
who are willing to get to him by any means necessary. Will
Callum uncover the dark secret which his father died over?
Will he even survive the next 365 days?

Wow.. that's all I pretty much have to say about this book!
It got directly to the point at the beginning, and it started picking up
pace immediately. It sort of reminded me of a Bourne
Identity, but the story is totally different. It was
definitely a quick read because it only took me a couple
of hours to read, but it sure keeps you on the edge of
your seat. I definitely think this book is a best seller
series in the making, and anyone who likes books with tons
of action and a mysterious twist to it will really enjoy
Conspiracy 365. I would recommend this for ages 12 and
up.

Serial novel for teens

Although Kane/Miller Publishers are very familiar to me for some of the wonderful and unique picture books they have imported from around the globe, I was completely surprised by the content and concept of this new series. So many books leave you begging for more, but the publishers haven't so cleverly set up a monthly release date for a 12-book series as Kane/Miller has. A teen's "24' (television show), I love the idea of a serial book or novel, which is actually not a `novel' idea. According to Wikipedia, many of Charles Dickens' novels were published as serial installments in a magazine.

Although some of the drama was a bit too far-fetched to be believed, this book was hard to put down. You also have to be a diligent reader because, being a serial in nature, there will not be any tidy ending until the last installment in December 2010. But, I look forward to seeing if this series can sustain the momentum.

And, as with all of the latest chapter books, it has its own website. Unfortunately, all contests are for Australia and New Zealand residents only, but the site content is available for everyone.

Twisted and Driven

Author Gabrielle Lord has set quite a task for herself: she has to write 12 fantastic action novels for teens during 2010. That's one a month, and they're all part of a huge conspiracy novel that has multiple parts, secrets, betrayals, treachery, and one mystery after another. The series is being billed as a 24 for teens.

The first novel, Conspiracy 365 January, starts out with a bang. Fifteen year old Callum Ormond `s life is in constant jeopardy, first from a storm, then a life jacket that doesn't function right, and finally by sharks that circle him and attack.

And that's just the opening chapter, folks. After that, things turn wicked. Callum's father is dead, passing away after a lingering illness that mentally drained him. At the end of his days, Callum's father was tied to a bed, watched over constantly, and spent his lucid moments drawing sketches that no one understands and everyone seems to want. Man, I was totally sucked in by everything Callum's facing, and I know he's not going to catch a decent break the rest of the year. Just like Jack Bauer has those incredibly long days.

Callum finds out about the sketches, but before he can get his hands on them, his Uncle Rafe manages to get away with them. Since it was Uncle Rafe that got their boat into trouble in the storm, I didn't like the guy from the get-go, but things get worse the more Callum explores. Even though Uncle Rafe is his father's twin, the two of them couldn't be more different.

After figuring out that his uncle knows more about the "Ormond Singularity" (whatever that is) than Callum does, our hero tries to outwit his uncle. Unfortunately, his dastardly uncle isn't the only one searching for the secrets Callum's father left behind.

Once Rafe ended up getting shot with his own gun and Callum's little sister ends up in a coma, I knew things were about to turn worse. In no time at all, Callum is the most wanted young fugitive around - and wanted by just the police. His mysterious enemies are closing in as well.

Through it all, though, Callum's good friend and electronic wizard Boges hangs with him. I like the friendship the two have, but the pacing is just too tightly constructed to show much of it. Still, there are eleven books to go.

The books are very stylistic as well. Chapters cover the days, sometimes only a page long, and sometimes they mark the passage of a few days. The individual chapters are also broken down by time stamps that keep the clock ticking for the reader. Another interesting twist on the book is that the pages are numbered backward, so you're always reading down to page 1. The device has been done before, but I doubt today's young readers have seen it, or that they will be any less intrigued by it than I was the first time I saw it done.

The book is incredibly fast-paced, so even reluctant readers and boys who'd generally rather play video games will probably get sucked up into the story. Plus, with one coming out every month, they won't have long to wait before another novel shows up.

If Callum survives. The last time I saw him, he was trapped in a barrel that was filling up with oil!

Really pushes the boundries of believeability

I know the last 2 stories in this series were farfetched, but come on. This story finally includes Dallas, Austin and Houston in Lynlee's bed. What I had trouble with(one of the things) is that Dallas lived the Dom lifestyle so much as to have lived with a slave(woman who has to be totally dominated as to have ALL her decisions made for her), while Austin and Houston shared a (or more) sub between them. I don't profess to know a lot about the BDSM lifestyle, only what I have read occasionally within a story I bought for another reason, but I don't see how the three would be willing to give most of that mindset up to share Lynlee with 5 other men. Sure there is bondage and toys but if especially Dallas got off on living with a woman he totally dominated I find it really hard to believe he would now be happy and satisified to just be with someone who is not willing to even call him, Austin or Huston master much less obey them. Another thing I found over the top was that the bad guys were right on their ranch and shooting up their house because they are so busy being with Lynlee. Lets also get some bad guys with a different reason for being the bad guys. I did enjoy the alone time she had with Lantry, it was sweet which was a big change from all the guys literally lining up for their chance at her body. Is it just me for having a really hard time believing any woman can give head several times a day and evening, sometimes in an hour? Also, with the many times they do double penetration (seemingly each day), how the heck can she not end up with one really large channel? Aside from all the sex and bad guy issues there are secrets alluded to regarding the McCain's father that are never answered, the half million dollar hit put on the internet for Lynlee is not brought up again for the last part of the book and the epilog is for 2 years later which makes it seem as if this is the last story for this series. That might not be the case but then the ending should have been handled differently. I like books with more men with one woman and with a lot of sex, but this story was too over the top for me. I guess it depends on what or how you like your sex in a story and whether you like a believable plot along with your sex.

In explorations of gay subjectivity as it is lived now and as it has been expressed in literary history and in the life and work of Foucault, Eribon argues that gay male politics, social life, and culture are transformative responses to an oppressive social order. Bringing together the work of Jean-Paul Sartre, Pierre Bourdieu, Judith Butler, and Erving Goffman, he contends that gay culture and political movements flow from the need to overcome a world of insult in the process of creating gay selves.

Eribon describes the emergence of homosexual literature in Britain and France at the turn of the last century and traces this new gay discourse from Oscar Wilde and the literary circles of late-Victorian Oxford to André Gide and Marcel Proust. He asserts that Foucault should be placed in a long line of authors—including Wilde, Gide, and Proust—who from the nineteenth century onward have tried to create spaces in which to resist subjection and reformulate oneself. Drawing on his unrivaled knowledge of Foucault’s oeuvre, Eribon presents a masterful new interpretation of Foucault. He calls attention to a particular passage from Madness and Civilization that has never been translated into English. Written some fifteen years before The History of Sexuality, this passage seems to contradict Foucault’s famous idea that homosexuality was a late-nineteenth-century construction. Including an argument for the use of Hannah Arendt’s thought in gay rights advocacy, Insult and the Making of the Gay Self is an impassioned call for critical, active engagement with the question of how gay life is shaped both from without and within.

Other topics addressed in this reader-friendly analysis include history's first Islamic terrorists and three important cases―two recent, deadly terrorists and a primary figure in our current war on terror.

The central idea throughout the book is that a person's attitude toward terror and terrorism―as well as whether he or she becomes a murderous terrorist, or even who wages a global war on terror―has much to do with that person's own terrifying experiences in infancy and childhood. Such terror, usually experienced first in the earliest interactions with the mother, is symbolically expressed, as Falk shows, in fairy tales and myths about terrifying witches and female monsters. Further terror may be experienced in the relationship with the father and also in various other traumatic ways. It is these early terrors, when extreme and uncontrollable, that most often produce terrorists and wars on terror, Falk argues. Thus, his book focuses on the conscious, but also on the irrational and unconscious causes of terrorism.

About the Author

Avner Falk is an internationally-known Israeli scholar, expert in the fields of psychohistory and political psychology. He trained as a clinical psychologist at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at Washington University in St. Louis. He practiced psychotherapy for 25 years, during which he served as Senior Clinical Psychologist at several mental health centers, before becoming a fulltime independent scholar. He authored seven earlier books, including Anti-Semitism: A History and Psychology of Hatred (Praeger, 2008), Fratricide in the Holy Land: A Psychoanalytic View of the Arab-Israeli Conflict, and Napoleon Against Himself: A Psychobiography.

Islamic suicide-bomber motives

The author, an Israeli psychoanalyst, has done an outstanding job in detailing the many, many different ideas that psychologists and psychoanalysts have developed to explain why Islamic, fundamentalist, jihadist suicide-bomber commit their attacks. The author literally `bends over backwards' in presenting any and apparently, just about all psychoanalytical theories regarding the `motives' as to why a suicide-bomber undertakes his/her action. The author shows that psychologists are divided as to what motivates a Muslim to become a suicide-bomber (an Islamikaze). The author believes that the typical suicide-bomber martyr (a Shaheed) has an underlying, unconscious `narcissistic pathology' personality. Are they sane or irrational? It depends. It appears that any psychologist can call some world leader, or some Islamikaze, as being `narcissistic', simply because that person really likes himself. This `in love with himself' produces `delusions of grander' in trying to improve the lot of Muslims by killing others that an Islamikaze dislikes. (Narcissism can be `good' or `bad' depending upon what a person does.) While that may really explain some `over-achievers' personality, the author presents no `empirical' evidence that narcissism substantially explains Islamikaze behavior, besides referring the reader to other books he has written. But is all of this nothing more than perhaps just psyco-babble? Even if we accept the author's diagnosis: that narcissism is the `problem', the author does not explain what the `solution' is in how to entice a suicide-bomber to abort his mission and `reform.' Nonetheless, this book is well worth reading for getting an extensive understanding about the many divergent psychological ideas as to what may `nourish' an Islamikaze's conscious and unconscious behavior: is it due to a young child's hurtful weaning away from his mother or is it due to revelations from the Quran (which the author discounts)? Yes, the author discusses `shame' and the `Oedipal' conflicts of the shaheeds. Chapter contents include: Religious Terror; Terrorists and Their Mothers; Narcissistic Rage and Islamic Terror; The Narcissistic and Borderline Personality Disorders; The [Muslim] State of Denial; A Clash of Civilizations?; The `Arab Mind'?; Fantasies of Rebirth Through Violent Death; and Suicide Murder as Unconscious Fusion with the Mother, among others. Initially different forces of change and forms of resistance are presented. Later, different approaches on organisational change are considered with the main emphasis on OD and thereafter, a case study on the company Hilti is described, in order to demonstrate an OD process. fascinating book

Bought this on the strength of 5-star review in Empire and the promise of a 'fascinating rather than squeamish' read (war and horror, not teddy bears). This lives up to it: it's subtle, and a bit of a challenge at times, but the range of films is fantastic - see the section on 'Come and See', or 'The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser' - and you get an idea of how film-makers were using children in the 1890s too! Highly recommended!

The book begins with a current review of the principles underlying acoustic immittance, including anatomy and physiology of the outer and middle ear. Separate chapters are then devoted to a practical discussion of each immittance measure, including single-frequency tympanometry, multiple-frequency tympanometry, the acoustic stapedial reflex, and wideband reflectance. Wide band reflectance is a novel approach for evaluation of middle ear function. The final two book chapters are devoted to a systematic description of specific clinical applications of acoustic immittance in infants and children with varied auditory disorders.

About the Author
Lisa L. Hunter, PhD, FAAA is an associate professor of otolaryngology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. She is the principle investigator of a National Institutes of Health project on Newborn Hearing Screening and Diagnosis, and has completed several research grants in Otitis Media and Hearing Loss in Children. She has authored over 50 publications on otitis media, pediatric audiology and diagnostic audiology, and has given over 100 national and international presentations. She has chaired numerous committees for national professional organizations and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education as well as a past member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Audiology.

Navid Shahnaz, PhD, Aud (C), is an Associate Professor of Audiology in the School of Audiology & Speech Sciences at The University of British Columbia (UBC), where he has been since July 2002. He has also been working as an audiologist during this time in a private practice. Before joining UBC he was an Assistant Professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences at University of Arizona. He received his MSc (1996) and PhD (2000) degree in audiology and communication sciences and disorders from The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders, McGill University. During his residency at McGill University, he served as a faculty lecturer and clinical supervisor of audiology for three years. Before joining McGill University to pursue his studies he was working as a clinical audiologist, instructor, and researcher for six years at Tehran Medical Sciences University and in other private practice sectors in Tehran, Iran. Dr. Shahnaz's main area of research interest is diagnostic audiology, specifically multi-frequency tympanomety and wide-band energy reflectance in newborns, children, and adults.

Informative and Succinct

Clear explanations of physical principles measured by immittance audiometry. I reference the chapter on multi-frequency, multi-component tympanometry more frequently than I reference any other book chapter in my office.

I disagree with reviews stating that the information in the book is not clinically relevant or that it would benefit from adding case examples. One of the best features of this work is that it's amazingly lean. The authors have managed to include enough information and explanation to make the book helpful without being verbose in the least.

Aside from being refreshing, this feature helps keep the work affordable. If you're thinking about buying this book, you probably don't need me to point out how unusual that is in an audiology text.

This book is heavy on history and theory, and has no clinical information at all. I was hoping for something to help me in the clinic. What I got was a nice history lesson and a lot of math.
