Cody Precord is a Software Engineer based in Minneapolis, MN, USA. He has been designing and writing systems and application software for AIX, Linux, Windows, and Macintosh OSX for the last 10 years using primarily C, C++, Perl, Bash, Korn Shell, and Python. The constant need to be working on multiple platforms naturally led Cody to the wxPython toolkit, which he has been using intensely for that last 5 years. Cody has been primarily using wxPython for his open source project Editra which is a cross platform development tool. He is interested in promoting cross platform development practices and improving usability in software.

tries to be too many things at once

There are so few books on wxPython--a great GUI package for the Python language which helps you build applications that can work as-well-as-native on multiple platforms--that I hate to disparage any of them. The problem with this book is that it mixes two models. There are "cookbook" texts (which O'Reilly in particular is good at). They typically present a catalog of fairly abstruse problems within a given programming realm: "Measuring Memory Usage on Linux" is an entry in Martelli's great Python Cookbook. Then there are how-to-program-in-X books which address people who know something about programming but nothing about language X or library X. This book tries to be both at once, so it isn't great at either. Because it begins from the beginning (what is a wxPython App), It doesn't have much for the semi-experienced user of wxPython, though the last chapter on "Building and Managing Applications for Distribution" is one I've learned from. On the other hand, whether a newcomer to Python could learn from the book how to build apps with wxPython, I'm not sure, though I think Rappin & Dunn's "wxPython in Action" does a better job of that. Even the Table of Contents gives the double game away: it's organized by simplest-to-more-complex, the way a beginner needs, not by functional categories of problems, which is what a more experienced programmer is looking for.

Taking the pain out of learning wxPython

At long last another book dedicated to wxPython application development is finally published.

The author is an active member of the wxPython users list and quite often posts answers to problems people are having with wxPython. He is more than qualified to write a book on the subject. Additionally, he has written Editra; a well-known editor which uses the wxPython framework.

wxPython has matured over the years, the documentation has also gotten better and a lot of experienced users can be found on the wxPython users list. That said users still stumble over various issues making their programs work. Books like this one will quickly find their way to the hands of wxPython users in need.

As with most software cookbooks, a problem is stated then the solution in source code is listed, followed by an explanation of how the code works. This book delivers the same format and in a concise and clear manner. Each problem-solution set is short enough to avoid loosing the reader and printed in an easy to read style. Most of the source listings are kept short. This makes it easy for the user to see an entire program (or enough of it) at a glance. I dislike source listings which droll on for pages at a time. They are hard to follow, and after a few pages the overall picture is easy to loose. This book has none of that.

The book is 293 pages long, broken into 12 Chapters. There is very little introductory material, and that's great. I very much dislike books which contain 30% or more of material that I have in other books or online resources. Authors and publishers should pay attention to this.

The preface tells you the expected prerequisites as opposed to wasting precious book space and your money, telling you about what you need to know before reading this book. Again, no chapters are wasted on introductory material already published in other books. There is simply no fluff in this book, it is meat and potatoes from beginning to end.

The book takes you from a brief introduction to wxPython all the way to threading and wxPython application distribution. There are even a few pages on Apple events, events that are specific to the Mac OS. Since I'm going to be working on a Mac very soon, I'm glad to have this information.

As I was reading the code and explanations, I found several features which I want to add to my standard wxPython application skeleton. The LoggerMixin in Chapter 9 is an example of something I hadn't thought about, but can use in just about every program I write. The fact that it is designed as a mixin means it should easily work in any program with little or no changes.

Conclusion
I have no negative comments about this book. I wish it would have been available when I was first learning wxPython. I highly recommend this book to everyone who has difficulty with wxPython. Tell your fellow wxPython users too. They will be glad you did.

Kindle form is NOT well done

I regret having spent the money. The kindle edition (as an earlier reviewer has noted) fails to indent any of the code examples. This is python! The indentation is syntactically significant. I'm using Kindle for Mac V 1.5.2.

Bad job Amazon. No biscuit. I've sent mail to get my money back.

Fun, Enjoyable and Enlightening

A fun and provocative read. More Western oriented than many of Chopra's books - the book revolves around the Arthurian legends and the legend of Merlin. As it is with most of Chopra's books, the read is easy, the language approachable, and the content thought provoking and profound if simple on the surface. A fun, enjoyable and enlightening book.

A captivating way to open the skeptical mind to the spirit

I found myself relating not only the symbolism of the Arthurian Lengend to my own real life in this time, but also other symbols that had been in my life but without interpretation until after listening to the book version of Chopra's "Way of the Wizard." So much more of my life became clear to me. I might have preferred another reader (perhaps I will read the written version). Nonetheless, I found the book quite inspiring and highly recommend it.

Wizardry and sorcerory have had negative conotations. Carlos Castenada helped to portray sorcerors in a better light. This reveals Merlin as a Seer (like the prophet Samuel). This book is filled with terrific insights. It may be the universe teaching us about the next step.

Soulstepping: African American Step Shows by Elizabeth C. Fine (Associate Professor in the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and Director of the Humanities Program, Virginia Tech) is an informed and informative introduction to a complex and unique form of performance that blends dance, percussion, chanting, drama, initially developed by African-American fraternities and sororities, and has evolved to now being practiced and performed worldwide. The history, culture, politics, and art of this African-American performance artform is examined in-depth; with black-and-white photographs embellish this impressively, scholarly, highly recommended contribution to Black American cultural studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

This book is one of a kind.

I enjoyed this book because it took me back in history to the roots of stepping. It connected me to my African and African-American Ancestors. It helped me relive my soul-stepping days as a Delta in Lambda Chapter in Chicago. Stepping is a tradition that has been passed on from generation to generation. Sororities and fraternities are known for their particular steps. Now, non-Greeks are stepping too. It is great to see how stepping has evolved and this book has captured the traditions of stepping. The first copy I bought was for me. The next book will be for my daughter in college so that she can have her own copy. Hats off to the author!

Trudy McKee is an Assistant Professor in the college of Allied Health Sciences at Thomas Jefferson University in Pennsylvania, where she regularly teaches biochemistry. She has her Ph.D. in biochemistry from Bryn Mawr College.

James McKee is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science. He regularly teaches organic chemistry. He has a Ph.D in organic chemistry from University of Maryland.

This book is of medium difficulty in the range of biochem texts out there. It's convoluted, hard to read, and it probably has the worst index definition of the wobble hypothesis that you could find. You read it, then you go, "What the hell..." Don't get me started on the kinetics chapter. I've read the book from the beginning to the end and I thought I'm better off reading about glycolysis and citric acid cycle in my old campbell biology text. I'm shelving this as the worst text in my learning career. I'll post an update if I ever find anything that is worse than this.

This is a particularly poor text. First, there are numerous errors throughout (in the writing and figures). Further, many of the examples used to demonstrate concrete applications of the concepts are poorly chosen and/or often presume a much deeper knowledge of biochemistry than is appropriate at that point in the text where presented. The associated Student Study Guide/Solutions Manual is also riddled with errors -- this is not unusual for study guides but it compounds the problems in the primary text. I have yet to find an appropriate text for a one semester biochemistry course.

Terrible Textbook

I don't have any Biochemistry textbooks to compare this to, but I have taken many classes over the last 20+ years, and this is by far one of the worst textbooks I ever remember having. It is very wordy, and the concepts are not explained in a manner where I can understand them clearly or apply them in any practical manner.
