Christopher T. Paris received his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible from Vanderbilt University, completing this dissertation under Jack Sasson. He is a lecturer in biblical studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School. His chief areas of interest are narrative criticism, especially of the Deuteronomistic History, and ancient Near Eastern literature.

This book is essential to any group working with mice. It covers all aspects from designing of targeting vectors and transgenes, embryonic stem cell culture and embryo manipulation and analysis. Very detailed methods as well as background information make this a great training manual for students, technicians and postdoctoral fellows.

The New Testament?

A definitive summary of mouse development and simple, concise proven protocols. This is the best publication there is for this kind of work. It's much better than the 2nd, ed. I wish it had more of a troubleshooting focus, but I guess if you are in this line of work, you should be able to figure out problems yourself, or query the tg list.... I like how there are alternative strategies mentioned depending on how your lab is equiped (or not).

About the Author

Dr. Charles B. (“Chuck”) Corbin, PhD, is professor emeritus in the School of Nutrition and Health Promotion at Arizona State University. He has published more than 200 journal articles and has authored or coauthored more than 90 books, including Concepts of Physical Fitness, Concepts of Fitness and Wellness, Fitness for Life, and Fitness for Life: Middle School and Fitness for Life: Elementary School, all winners of Texty Awards. Dr. Corbin is internationally recognized as an expert in physical activity, health, and wellness promotion and youth physical fitness. He has presented keynote addresses at more than 40 state AHPERD conventions, made major addresses in more than 15 countries, and presented numerous named lectures. He is a past president and emeritus fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology, a fellow of the North American Society for Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance Professionals, an ACSM fellow, and a life member and honor fellow of AAHPERD. His awards include the Healthy American Fitness Leaders Award from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition (PCFSN) and National Jaycees; Distinguished Service Award of the PCFSN; and the Honor Award, Physical Fitness Council Honor Award, Hanson Award, and Alliance Scholar Award from AAHPERD. He received distinguished alumnus awards from the University of New Mexico and the University of Illinois. He served for more than 20 years as a member of the Advisory Board of Fitnessgram and was the first chair of the Science Board of the PCFSN. He was a member of an Institute on Medicine (IOM) committee for youth fitness testing. He was selected to the National Association of Sports and Physical Education (NASPE) Hall of Fame. In 2009 Dr. Corbin was chosen for the Gulick Award, the highest award of AAHPERD. In 2013 he received the Hetherington Award, the highest honor of the National Academy of Kinesiology.

Guy C. Le Masurier, PhD, is a professor of sport, health, and physical education at Vancouver Island University (Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada). He has published numerous articles related to youth physical activity and physical education and coauthored the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) Physical Activity Guidelines for Children. Dr. Le Masurier has given more than 30 research and professional presentations at national and regional meetings. He reviews research for numerous professional journals and has contributed to Fitness for Life, Fifth Edition, and the Physical Best Activity Guide. Dr. Le Masurier is a member of AAHPERD, NASPE, ACSM, and Canadian AHPERD. He is also a research consortium fellow of SHAPE America.

Contributing author: Karen E. McConnell, PhD, a professor at Pacific Lutheran University, is a certified health education specialist (CHES) and has taught at the university level for more than 15 years in areas related to health and fitness education, curriculum and assessment, and exercise science. She has written or contributed to over a dozen book chapters and texts, including the teacher resources for Fitness for Life (fifth and sixth editions). She is a recipient of the Arthur Broten Young Scholar Award and has received the University Professional of the Year Award from the Washington Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance for contributions made to state standards in health and fitness. Good, but needs work.

A great book this is, with realistic goals for exercise and nutrition. It doesn’t say that every kid can be a jock, because every kid can’t. It defines fitness as being able to do the most with the least effort, so in a nutshell it means that fitness is being able to use your body to do what you need. But it also says that fitness-demanding jobs are in decline, so fitness is now more of a concern for average cubicle-slaves.
There’s good advice here for starting out, especially if you’re sedentary, and it shows you how to use small steps to getting in shape. It warns against fad diets and fad machines, because they don’t work. The ab-master, ab-roller- ab-vibrator, Nordic Track, Soloflex; they were advertised with beautiful, muscular models, and bought by desperate nebbishes who wanted a quick fix to a long-term problem. I should know, I was one of them, and my Nordic Track didn’t help. I should’ve just gotten rid of the TV and walked to school.
The problem with this book is the target audience. It focuses mostly on kids, but what about the adults? People who have to drive an hour in each direction and sit at a desk all day are in a sedentary trap. What about construction workers work their knees and shoulders hard all day? What kind of fitness advise is there for them? Another problem is the photos; they’re all of beautiful young men and women. No acne, flabby bellies, fat thighs, fat butts, etc. I would be wary of showing this book to teens, because seeing all this perfection can make them hate their bodies. Not every teen has beautiful hair and a great tan. It also doesn’t take into account that some schools have the kids in there until 5pm, and they’ve cut out gym class. It also doesn’t factor that when a school has P.E. it usually favors the jocks and consists of “here’s a ball go play.” The non-athletic kids are left out, picked last.

Alright but not the same.

My workplace has the 6th edition of this book, I bought the eighth thinking I receive the same but that was not the case. While it does provide summaries of almost everything it really cuts out the meaty part of what made O'Hara's book so special. Plus for the "new" stuff it's a bunch of references to look at no summary attached. I felt cheated with this purchase.

About the Author

John Winterdyk is the director of the Centre for Criminology and Justice Research (CCJR) at Mount Royal University. He is also an adjunct professor at St. Thomas University (Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada) and the Polytechnic in Namibia (Windhoek, Namibia). He has published extensively in the areas of youth justice, human trafficking, international criminal justice, and criminological theory. John was the recent (2009) guest editor for a special issue of the journal International Criminal Justice Review on genocide. Current areas of research interest include identity theft, corrections, death in custody, prison gangs, teen courts, and crime prevention.

Benjamin Perrin is an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law. He is the author of several academic articles on human trafficking and Invisible Chains: Canada’s Underground World of Human Trafficking (Perrin 2010a). Professor Perrin has advised the Government of Canada on the human trafficking issue as a senior policy advisor and as a witness before several Parliamentary committees. He has also worked overseas with victims and assisted in the prosecution of child sex offenders. In 2009, Professor Perrin was named a Hero Acting to End Modern-Day Slavery by Secretary Hillary Clinton and the U.S. State Department; he is the first Canadian to receive this honour.

Philip Reichel is a tenured full professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Northern Colorado and adjunct professor in the Department of Justice Studies at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Head games, in more ways than one

This is a terrific and involving book. Though it carries the Vegas Lit imprint and some of the novel takes place in that fabled land, the story's real home is inside the head of a fascinating, funny and scary man who has reached the end of his rope -- and then starts weaving a whole new one. Konik takes the concept of the unreliable narrator down some unsettling and yet hugely entertaining pathways. Konik knows intimately the psychical AND the psychic side of Las Vegas, taking advantage of that city's ongoing struggle between transformative dreams and bleak reality, as reflected in the mind of his lead character. A fine, blackly funny read.

Feel of a classic

First, Konik chooses his words carefully, making every one count. Second, he chose two very difficult genres: 1) Vegas, and how Vegas is a cliche of itself; 2) loser main character. Konik succeeds in being inside Vegas, making it fresh; and somehow (you'll have to read it for yourself) he makes his loser main character a winner. Some will automatically compare his lead character to Humbert Humbert but don't forget Ignatius J. Reilly (Confederacy of Dunces)--two classic losers who readers became attached to. This book, and Fear & Loathing, are the two best novels, by far, which take place in Las Vegas. Period.

Michael Konik hits it out of the park -- again.

Becoming Bobby is the story of a middle-aged man, bored with his job and wife. So one day he leaves both behind, assumes the identity his charismatic and successful alter-ago Bobby, and heads to an unspecified gambling city in the Desert. His new life is anything but boring. More important than the plot, Michael Konik has a way with words that makes every page a thrill to read and the book hard to put down. Not many authors are outstanding writers in both fiction and non-fiction, but with this, his first fiction book, Konik proves he can write well about anything. Just to be warned, this book has strong language and adult themes.
