About the Author
John L. Worrall is Professor of Criminology and Program Head at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). A Seattle native, he received a B.A., double majoring in psychology and law and justice, from Central Washington University in 1994. Both his M.A. (criminal justice) and Ph.D. (political science) were received from Washington State University, where he graduated in 1999. From 1999-2006, he was a member of the criminal justice faculty at California State University, San Bernardino. He joined UTD in Fall 2006, was promoted to full professor in 2008, and in 2010 was selected to direct the criminology program. Dr. Worrall has published articles and book chapters on a wide range of topics ranging from legal issues in policing to crime measurement, having recently been ranked one of the most prolific sole and lead authors in the discipline. Courses he regularly teaches (and has authored texts for) include introductory criminal justice, criminal procedure, and crime control policy. As Program Head at UTD, Dr. Worrall directs undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. programs in criminology, including an online MS program, which he developed. He is active in the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the American Society of Criminology, and a number of regional associations. Finally, he continues to serve as editor of the journal Police Quarterly, a position he has held since 2008.

Know your Rights!

I rented this textbook for my Pre-Law Class. It is okay. It is a lot of reading!! The text does provide diagrams and pixctures and does a good job of explaining the major landmark Supreme Court cases! Which is essential that every American should know about their RIGHTS!

I highly recommend this! Our RIGHTS should not be violated by the local, state and or federal government! Know your rights!

Don't judge a book by its cover.

It's in pretty terrible shape. The description said it was in good to excellent, but it's missing pages and almost all of the text in the book is highlighted making it impossible for me highlight anything important. If I knew it was going to be in such shabby shape, I would've bitten the bullet and got a new one.

Alan Ball is for the stage what Wally Lamb isfor literature

Alan Ball's two act non-musical play, "Five Women wearing The Same Dress" is something that touches us all because in one way or another, we've all lived it. To begin, you already know Alan Ball becausse his television series "Six Feet Under" was known even to people who did not get HBO. (I watched it's entirety on DVD. Mr. Ball is today's Bernard Shaw; Today's Briajn Friel; Tenneseee williams; Today's Edward Albee; Tolday's promise that the American Theatre is not dead but thriving with brilliance, wamrth and truth.

What happens at a reunion? This tiopouc is well studied in film, theatre, teleivision and literature, but so much exists worth exploring in the convcept of looking back at one's life and seeing how it affected you that the subject is just as fresh as Kaufman & Hart's "Merrily We Roll Along", Sondheim's "Follies", "Is There Life After high School, "The Heidi Chronicles" and onward. In this case we have five bridesmaids who take turns escaping from the reception to one of the oppulent bedrooms upstairs. The five women have one thing in common: at one point they were all connected in some way to tracy, the bride whom we never see and whom is described as a Macy's day float in her dress. Their own dresses are typical hporrific dresses complete with hats. Each woman arrives with expectations, surprised to be a bridesmaid and very different from each other. By the end of the evening (the play runs just over two hours with an intermission) each of he women have a lot more in common than Tracy and have learned that perhaps they dpon't even have Tracy as a piece of unity. It is no accident that we never see her.

The dialogue- and monologues for you acting students - is fresh and honst; fast paced like an Aaron Sorkin or Joss Wheedon script, yet paces well. The play requires a middle southern dialect in varying degrees -always subtle- but not one of these women is stupid or a stereotype, though they may appear so as we meet them.

So whether you're looking to put on a play or somply enjoy reading them, Alan Ball's "Five Women Wearing The Same Dress" is remarkable. A hint of Henley's "Crimes Of The Heart" or "Steel Magnolias". A bit of Aaron Sorkin's "A Few Good Men," Ball writes fro women well and the only thing I noted was that, given the age of the play, to do it now one would have to doublke the proice of Meredith's Victoria Secret budget.

Scene for Acting Scene

I used this book for use in acting class for a specific scene with nice amounts of dialogue between two women. I like the idea of the book, and Ball's attempt to make the women sound and appear realistic and authentic, but it definitely fell short in some places. Worked well for class, though, as you really have to look into your objectives since all of these women have a lot of issues.

"The Historian as Detective: Essays on Evidence" is a superb collection of cautionary tales on the difficulty of being an effective historian. Thanks to Robin Winks' superb editing, the reader, whether of popular history or of the more rigorous academic variety, is presented with summaries of investigations into various historical matters and the difficulties of determining which historical raw materials may be real, which may be false, what cannot be known, and not least, what may be probative in any given line of historical inquiry.

The essays themselves cover a huge amount of ground, from the days of Rome to the John F. Kennedy assassination, and many interesting topics in-between. Some examine the use of documents, others the use of testimony by eyewitnesses, and still others the providence of physical items of history and their interpretation. In each case, the would-be historian may learn something about the limits of the craft. Cases concerning false documents that fooled even experienced historians are especially illuminating.

"The Historian as Detective" is very highly recommended to both the popular reader of history and the would-be historian. This volume is out of print but well-worth while to track down from used book dealers.

Tony is an African-American boy with a positive outlook despite the fact that his family is poor and life is tough. He lives with his mother, two older brothers, and young sister in an inner-city apartment surrounded by graffiti and police cars: "they saw it all as they rode/Broken-down houses/and stores that stayed closed./People outside/with nothing to do all day./Tony couldn't daydream those problems away." Though mean teachers and a bully at school just add to his stress, Tony's refrain, "I focus on the good/I laugh away the bad,/and I never forget/that it could always be worse," helps him rise above adversity. Digitally scanned and colored-ink cartoons and collaged photographs illustrate this picture book for older readers. About the Author
Dr. Sujan Dass is an award- winning educator, author and researcher. Much of his work has focused on at-risk youth and other people struggling against difficult odds. As executive director of Show and Prove Youth Outreach, a nonprofit targeting high-risk teens, he designed programs and curricula teaching the life skills needed for overcoming adversity. Real Life is No Fairy Tale is based on his research, professional experience, and his own background as a former at-risk youth. He lives in Atlanta with his wife and two children.

great book / more stories.

Great book for the youth 7-10 (probably earlier depending on your childs level of advancement). I like the vocab words in the back of the book to have the kid go over and understand what he/she just read from the story. The story that's told is kinda two fold. It teaches kids who aren't currently dealing in a situation like this to understand that what you have can always be taken away and to be grateful for your current situation. And if you're a kid in a situation as such, there are ways to properly navigate through them to come out as best you can. My only knock is that yeah i'm greedy, i wanted more. when's the next book? peace

delightful

i thought this book was wonderful, one of the most fun additions to my gardening library in years. while i agree with the other reviewer that the writing is of a completely different style than most gardening books - it is very stream-of-consciousness and conversational - to me those were features, not bugs. i thoroughly enjoyed the discussions of the plants selected for this book, because they are all plants that i've been wanting to learn more about or to add to my garden but haven't seen this kind of dedication to their praises and attributes before. really, my only complaint is that it would have been great to have even more photographs of combinations and in-situ plant setups, but, hey, that is why there is pinterest.

Full of fresh and exciting planting ideas, especially for the colder zones

As an Iowa gardener, I was excited to see that Kelly Norris has published a new gardening book, “Plants with Style.” I greatly admired his book about irises that was published several years ago, I was happy to hear that he had been appointed as horticultural manager of the excitingly revitalized Des Moines Botanical Garden, and I heard him speak last year in Cedar Rapids (he was an entertaining and knowledgeable speaker).

Norris is a well-informed and enthusiastic gardener, and his new book reflects his extensive experience (even though he is a gardener only in his late 20s) as well as his boundless enthusiasm for plants and garden design. “Plants with Style” reads like an informal garden tour with a fervent young plant geek (he refers to himself as such), urging us to try our luck with the numerous new and unusual plants that he has run across in his career as a gardener and in his visits to numerous gardens of other plant enthusiasts. (Note: One of Norris’ goals is to make gardening more appealing to younger people, and sometimes his language can be conspicuously trendy, although he does tone down the hip-speak by the middle of the book).

“Plants with Style” is divided into five chapters: The first emphasizes planting what grows well in your own region – always good advice. The second covers trees, shrubs and structural plants that Norris believes should be more widely planted. Chapter Three mentions less well-known varieties of “emblem plants”: tulips in April, peonies and iris in May, etc., without which a garden misses the glories of the seasons. The fourth chapter covers the attributes that make garden vignettes successful: color, contrast and texture, and shows examples of interesting plants and combinations with these characteristics. And the final chapter discusses unusual plants that can add quirky interest to a garden.

In every chapter, I was pleased to learn about plants or varieties that were unknown to me, and I hope to be able to find some of them as they become more widely distributed – it’s books like this (and magazine articles) that are responsible for generating enough interest in newer plants for garden centers to start carrying them.

Photos are included for most of the plants he mentions, and although I would like to have seen more garden composition photos in the chapter about garden vignettes, the book is about specific recommended plants, not overall garden design, and the plant close-ups are sufficient.

It would have been useful if there had been an appendix with a chart listing the recommended plants, their size, growing conditions, hardiness, etc.

And on the topic of hardiness: One quibble I have is that Norris seems to be trying to appeal to gardeners in all regions of the United States (if such a book of planting recommendations is even possible), even though his own planting experience is limited to what will grow in Iowa. I understand that most garden writers have tried and failed to grow certain plants and still mention them in their books, based on others’ success, but it was still disappointing to me that some of the plants he mentions won’t grow here in the hardiness Zone 5 we share in common. Aren’t there already enough books about what will grow in Oregon? Norris should stick with his strengths and concentrate on what will grow in his own region – just as he advises us in Chapter 1.

But overall I found the book to be useful and full of fresh and exciting ideas – I’m inspired to try some new plants in my garden. I recommend “Planting with Style” to other gardeners who are interested in learning about lesser-known plants, particularly for gardeners in the colder zones of the Midwest and Northeast.

Plants to think about.

A well written book on garden plants. The photos are generally close up and on not on glossy paper, but show the plant reasonably well. No flower borders are shown. I have really enjoyed reading this new book in this New Year 2016, even though we are suffering a heat wave for our summer here in New Zealand.
I can easy recommend it to all gardeners.

If the author was thirteen when they wrote this, I would believe that. My eyes hurt from all of the eye rolling moments induced by bad grammar, poor plot, an immature character I could not root for, and an unrealistic ending wrapped up so poorly and so fast it must have been past the poor authors bedtime.
