Besides being a comprehensive guide to the AT and its supporting services, what I really think it amazing about the new Guide is the way in which David collects and manages all of the information in it. There is an enormous amount of information in the Guide about the trail itself, hiker hostels, restaurants, resupply options, health care, vets, transportation, outfitters, gear manufacturers, water sources, shelters, and so on. This is a guy who is making a lot of phone calls to keep this information up to date, in addition to visiting trail towns, and handing out GPS devices to thru-hikers who send him back coordinates to include in the book. I know some map makers, and trust me, this kind of information management is an art form. On top of keeping all of this data organized, accurate and linked together (map and GPS coordinates, elevation data and town services), David is invested in making the Guide easy to use and read, applying the visual principals of Edward Tufte to the display and organization of the information on the page. Excellent format, so-so accuracy

I used this guide for a 240-mile hike from Swatara Gap, PA, to Thornton Gap, VA. After the trip, I bought the Thru-Hiker's Companion for a direct comparison of the descriptions for this section. I would say that the AT Guide is way better in terms of the presentation and contains more data, but appears to be less accurate on the important points.

Neither of the books is a replacement for maps; they contain only mileage data and information needed to hike the trail (including about nearby towns). Maps are not needed to hike the AT or even helpful (with the possible exception of the White Mountains in NH). I like maps, so I used to bring the maps from the AT section guides, but this becomes less practical for hiking long distances, so I skipped them this time.

The AT guide is more compact in size and (at least almost) fits in a one-quart ziploc bag; it saves quite a bit of space by putting the elevation profile in background. The Companion certainly does not fit in a one-quart ziploc bag. It has finally added the elevation profile, but not as background (and so requires extra space).

The AT guide comes in 4 different formats, north/south-bound and book/loose pages; the Companion comes in only one version (NB book). While it is not a huge deal, it is certainly nice to use a SB version if you are going SB. It appears that the SB version is produced by computer from the NB version, which results in some nearby places listed out of order, but this is rarely an issue (SoBo mile 1162.8 is one example).

The AT guide alternates mileage pages with information pages; the Companion does this state-by-state, so there could be quite a few pages between where you are on the mileage pages and the information pages. On the other hand, the Companion has more background information on shelters, etc.; it is useless for hiking, but could be somewhat entertaining.

The AT guide contains way more mileage points on the trail. This can make one feel good about making progress, though they often seem made up (listing mileage down to a tenth of a mile and elevation down to a foot). For example, the Washington Monument at 1146.3 is not .1 mile off the trail, but at most 100 feet. The three locations at 1162.8 are spread out over at least .2 mile, I would guess. The two trails to Blackburn AT Center listed at 1178.2 are .2 mile apart as well. There are 2 trails to each of Myron Glaser Cabin and Sky Meadows State Park Visitors Center, about a mile apart in both cases, but the book lists only one in each case, at 1197.4 and 1202.2, respectively. In general, whether certain trail features (such as streams and side trails) are listed seems to be random.

On the other hand, some important information in the AT guide is sometimes inaccurate or missing. For example, the AT guide claims that one of the stores at Keys Gap, WV (SB mile 1172) is a long-term resupply. In fact, the Sweet Springs store is a small convenience store at a gas station. While the difference in food for a few days was a minor inconvenience for me, I was not able to buy good (waterproof) bandaids there or even DEET (they ran out of the latter and do not stock the former). While the AT guide is usually fairly accurate when describing the water situation at the shelters, sometimes this information is either quite a bit off or is simply missing. One example is the Tom Floyd Shelter (1222.6), where the water is a steep .2 mile hike down. The Companion is correct in both of these regards and I have not noticed any errors or important missing information; the Companion also seems to list more motels/hotels (e.g. in Cascade, MD).

On page 127 of the SB guide, Memorial and Labor Day are switched twice.

I have told a number of thru-hikers of the accuracies I found in the AT Guide. They were not surprised and told me that they call it ``the book of lies." Nevertheless, 90-95% of them use this book.

If you like to have a paper copy of a guide and carry a smart phone, I would suggest buying the AT Guide and downloading the pdf of the Companion (available directly from ALDHA); both are pretty cheap relatively speaking.

The only guide you need for the AT.

This is everything and more than you need for a SOBO AT thru or section hike. There were a few errors and typos where the page numbers were off but it wasn't a big deal. This as town maps, phone numbers, businesses, water sources, shelters, campsites, road crossings and a nice elevation profile. I used the bound edition and kept it in two ziplock bags for my thru hike. It got really wet once but I finished the entire trail with the book still intact. I know AWOL and several other people spend countless hours each year updating this and it really shows. AWOL is the man!

Mileage seemed a bit off in certain areas but overall it was extremely helpful. Using this book I was able to plan on the go since the trail likes to ignore your original plans. If you're going, you need this book.

I'm confused, did I miss something? Clearly I did!

I started this book last night and liked it. Then all of the sudden, the plot changes and ??? I thought, either I'm really stupid or I'm reading too fast and I missed something. So I went back and reread several pages.

The book begins with Holland, a hedge-fund wife, being close friends with her sister- in- law Kiki. When Kiki and her husband Hal begin divorce proceedings, Holland's mother in law lays down the law that no one in the family should continue a friendship with Kiki.Holly and Kiki are best pals and Holly isnt too happy with her snotty mother in law's edict.

One evening, Holland's husband Tim is out of town and she's getting ready for a night out with other hedge-fund wives. Are you with me? Then without any explanation, in the next paragraph, Holly is headed out with Kiki and its her first time out since her divorce from Tim. Huh? What? The entire book up until this point was about Kiki and Hal's divorce, from Holly's point of view.

I was so confused, I reread the chapter and nowhere did it say anything about Holly and Tim getting divorced. Since I was a little confused, I set the book aside. Im sure its great and the author is funny and the tone of the book was good but I definitely have questions!

Timely and laugh out loud funny

The Ex-Mrs. Hedgefund is both a quick funny beach read and a keenly observed social comedy of its time and place. It's a send-up of the personal excesses practiced by the New York City "hedgie" set prior to the current economic crisis, and the story a newly divorced mom finding her way back to happiness. The book had me alternately laughing out loud, chuckling under my breath and nodding in recognition of the characters and situations. Holly, the main character/narrator, must navigate between her previously comfortable life and a new one, minus the perks of wealth, that might really be happy, all the while trying to keep her son well-grounded. You don't need to be a New Yorker or know the financial world to enjoy this book, as Kargman explains a lot in both Holly's narrative and in the fun charts scattered throughout the book. Jill Kargman is great at skewering the rarified world of the Upper East Side of NYC that she knows best, with sharp-witted humor, but obvious fondness for its foibles.

Must Summer Read!!!!

I have read all of Mrs Kargman's books (I am actually a male) and enjoy her intellect and approach to todays social strata. Over the last few years the world had become a somewhat surreal place and to truly understand where we are collectively heading one must remember where we were. Some of the excesses were extraordinary and absurd. This book gives a fantastic angle into the lives of an entire subculture of money hungry, vacuous people. They defined success, stature and class simply as a correlation to material wealth.

The ex-mrs. hedgefund will be remembered as an anthropological assessment of a time that many mere "wealthy" people hope never returns. This book is a must read and can easily be read in a day at the beach and will definitely create enjoyable dinner conversation. The only thing I would like to do now is spend an hour with the author and share some more anecdotes.

An Essential Book for College Access and Success Programs and Practitioners

This book lays a path for a profound shift in the way that practitioners support the young people we work with. Using clear and accessible ideas and language, incorporating theory, practice, and personal experiences, the authors frame college access and success as a process that should be guided by an intentional and reflective focus on the various facets of adolescent development. The chapters on identity development are especially informative. I highly recommend 'Ready, Willing, and Able' to anyone working with young people - in schools, after-school programs, community agencies, etc.

I can't believe this valuable book only had a few reviews, so thought I'd add mine. I'm helping with the design of a college prep program for middle and high school children who are from low-income backgrounds and whose parents have not attended college. As I searched for research on college prep for this audience, I found most information was geared toward children who are already motivated to go to college and/or who already have financial and other supports. Then I found this excellent book. It is completely targeted toward an audience like this and begins by addressing how to help these youth make decisions about whether they will attend college. It goes on to give advice on how to help them find their own motivation and make their own plans. It provides theory as well as some very practical strategies-many of which I will use. It emphasizes that the adult's role is to help guide the youth in their own process of deciding upon and preparing for college (so that they will fully own their enrollment and goals and persist to graduation) and gives steps for doing so. I was particularly impressed with the passages that talk about drawing peers and parents into this process and valuing their ability to contribute, and not to automatically dismiss them as being destructive influences (because they didn't go to college, are low-income, are young, etc.).

A Must-Read for Anyone Working in College Access/Persistence!

This book is phenomenal. It marries theory to practice and provides real world examples that bind the two together. Anyone working in college counseling, college access/persistence programming or working with at-risk/first-generation/underrepresented populations should use this book as a guide to facilitating successful postsecondary educational opportunites for their students. Their advice works for different contexts: school, community programming, individuals and groups. Simply phenomenal.

Good for basic concepts. Many mistakes, incorrect answers, and poor explanations. Be prepared to be confused and frustrated!

This is a decent text for introduction to anesthesia concepts. As a CA-1, it's one of the only useful question resources for anesthesia basic knowledge. HOWEVER, there are MANY MANY errors in the books which makes it VERY frustrating when doing the questions. The errors aren't necessarily in the content, but MANY times the answers do NOT address the original question. It just discusses a topic related to the question which leaves you wondering what the actual explanation is. Some answers say C but the explanation describes A as the correct answer.

For instance, question 341 asks for the greatest to least anesthetic requirements between adults, neonates, and infants. The answer explains that sevo is different from all other anesthetics in this regard, and then goes on to talk about what the answer would be if it were asking about sevo in specific. But the correct answer they give IS for sevo and not for most volatile anesthetics as the question intended. See the confusion? Just one of MANY types of frustrating errors in this book.

For a question book that's on its FIFTH edition, there are a LOT of overlooked errors, outdated information, and confusing answers. I wish there were a way to contact them to inform them, but I'm sure many already have and little has been changed. Goes to show that they re-release the same text with a new edition title to make a fresh new buck.

Overall, most of the question and answers are useful for reviewing basic anesthesia concepts for CA-1's and 2's. But beware the frustration and confusion you'll encounter when using this text.

Outstanding Anesthesiology Textbook in the Question-and-Answer Format

"Anesthesia: A Comprehensive Review, Fifth Edition" is a superb textbook, and it is widely considered to be the best of the Anesthesiology textbooks written in the question-and-answer format. It provides an excellent review of the fundamental principles of the specialty of Anesthesiology, as well as thorough coverage of the subspecialty areas of Anesthesiology practice. Used in conjunction with one of the comprehensive textbooks of Anesthesiology, this very useful question-and-answer manual serves to permanently imprint the key concepts that are an essential component of the knowledge base of every resident. It truly functions as the ideal complement to a comprehensive textbook of Anesthesiology, when preparing for the ABA written board examination. "Anesthesia: A Comprehensive Review, Fifth Edition" is an exceedingly useful educational resource for Anesthesiology residents, and I give it my highest recommendation.

A good review book. Useful for anesthesia residents preparing for intraining exam and board certification. Sadly, I paid $80 for the 4th edition of the same book, and to my disappointment about 80-90% of the questions are the SAME WORD FOR WORD from the 4th edition. Not worth the upgrade. I was expecting more

I only got the book because of the controversy. I've never read Thor before... Not since the early 80s anyway.
I liked the artwork and the story. I'm probably a new Thor reader.

I just love this series so much. I typically just pick up occasional and undeniable classics in the TPB world. I don't buy anything new. This, however... this series is so effing great that I enjoy every moment of it. I will keep pre-ordering for as long as it stays this great!
