Nice book but..

My only frustration is that she assumes we all own a pressure cooker!! ALL of the lentil recipes and many, many others in the book have instructions using the pressure cooker method only. It would have been nice to also include alternative stovetop instructions. Frustrating to say the least, since the recipes look sooo inviting..

My most used cookbook

I found this book in our public library and used it so much that I had to buy it. The step by step directions are great. A basic recipe for potatoes and peas used the same ingredients that I have been using for decades but the proportions were different. The result was yummy. I felt like I was eating my mom's cooking. I have found recipes for north Indian meals that I haven't seen elsewhere. This cookbook is so good that I am buying another copy to send to my daughter.

This is absolutely one of my favorite cookbooks! The recipes are flavorful, simple, authentic, and taste amazing. There are very nice illustrations of each item throughout. The recipes are as easy to follow and easy to cook. Whether you are vegetarian or not, if you enjoy good Indian food, you will love this book!

Outstanding analyses of political rhetoric and metaphor usage

I highly recommend this amazing book entitled Politicians and Rhetoric: The Persuasive Power of Metaphor, 2nd Edition by Jonathan Charteris-Black (Palgrave MacMillan, 2011). Charteris-Black is a professor of linguistics at the University of the West of England in Bristol, England. Here is a brief review.

The book consists of twelve chapters. The first two chapters provide an excellent summary of the importance of understanding metaphors in the art of rhetoric, persuasion, and speech making used by all successful politicians. The next nine chapters consist of incredibly insightful analyses of how certain political leaders have used metaphors in their speeches. These politicians include four giants of British politics: Winston Churchill, Enoch Powell, Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair along with five American leaders: Martin Luther King, Jr., Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. The final chapter provides an analysis of the nexus of myth, metaphor and political leadership.

In each chapter, Charteris-Black analyzes the speeches of the politician with a specific theme that characterizes their particular rhetoric. For example, he discusses Winston Churchill in terms of the heroic myth, Martin Luther King, Jr. and the messianic myth, Ronald Reagan and the romantic myth, Margaret Thatcher and the myth of Boudicca, George Bush and the rhetoric of moral accounting and Barack Obama and the myth of the American Dream. Each person’s speeches are analyzed in the historical context and particular political environment. He explains how we can understand the rhetoric of Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher in terms of myths of heroes or past warriors. Churchill had to rally British citizens to make sacrifices for the war effort and had to persuade the Americans to become their allies. He was successful at doing this by using metaphors of journeys and heroes. Thatcher tapped into the myth of Boudicca, the 1st century Celtic queen who led an uprising against the Roman army. Thatcher used metaphors of conflict as in the concept that political opponents are enemies to get the British to rally around her as Boudicca did centuries earlier. Charteris-Black also provides insightful analyses of the speeches of Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, all in the context of difficult political climates.

By far the most fascinating chapter for me was the section on Martin Luther King, Jr. Having analyzed his speeches myself, I was in awe of the depth of analysis that Charteris-Black presented in this book. He analyzed his speeches in terms of the Messianic myth, journey metaphors, landscape metaphors and in the context of the segregation and non-violence of the 1960s. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book.

My only criticisms of the book consist of a few editorial oversights. Although the author provides excellent appendices on his corpuses, a list of conceptual metaphors analyzed in the book, and a general index, cited authors are not included in any of the indices, a strange fact given the excellence of the scholarship throughout the book. Also, there is an inconsistent use of italics in examples of metaphors. In most cases, the conceptual metaphors being analyzed are italicized in quotations from the corpus while in other cases there are no italics. More substantively, in the chapter on Margaret Thatcher, Charteris-Black compares her to Boudica but never gives a background on the Celtic warrior, nor does he make explicit how Thatcher compared to Boudica. Perhaps British readers are more familiar with both Thatcher and Boudica but Americans may have to do a bit of research to understand the relationship between the two as I had to do.

Finally, I also found it odd that Charteris-Black uses a theory of metaphor analysis called blending theory without citing any references for its origin. I assume he is referring to the theories proposed by Fauconnier and Turner (2002) or the nice summary of the theory in Koveces (2004) but he does not mention either. Despite this omission, he makes great use of blending theory and, while although a bit cumbersome to explain, promises to be a very useful way to explain metaphors. No one quite understands how citizens understand political metaphors, using blended theory may be a way to fine tune our analyses of metaphor usage.

Overall, Politicians and Rhetoric is a great addition to our study of metaphors in politics. Charteris-Black shows a masterful understanding of classical and modern rhetoric, metaphor analysis and current political machinations of skilled orators. It is essential reading for any student of English, linguistics, or political science.

It is a collection of short stories, each only a couple of pages long, that makes for easy reading. It’s a book that you can pick up, put down, and pick up again even a week later since the short stories end, making it an ideal late night or lunchtime read. Each of the short stories is based on real life experiences by this PA in the course of his career. It is not a self-glorifying autobiography. It is a collection of memorable experiences, some focused on the patient, some on the patient’s family, and some on the supervising physician or even a specialist whose expertise was critical in the care of the patient and provided a learning experience for the PA. There are funny stories, sad stories, ingenious revelations, and that stereotypic patient story. I enjoyed reading this book for all of the reasons above, but I think that the most enjoyable part was the reflections I experienced about my own patients in the course of my career. Many of these stories triggered memories of previous patient experiences of my own. I have often stated that I would write a book someday…..Well, this Seth Wittner did just that! If you’re expecting some complex novel detailing the psychologic journey of a student becoming a PA and learning the life of a PA the hard way, you’re not going to get it. If you’re looking for some enjoyable, mostly light-hearted recollections of patient-care experiences, it’s worth the read! Great stories and interesting insights

This was a nice, though short, collection of stories from the author and others highlighting various topics in healthcare. As a student, I appreciated the insights from a more experienced PA as well as some tips on what not to do. The book is on the short end though.

Music Meets Medicine! A wonderful digital book for the price!

Seth Wittner provides such an illustrative picture of his journey to becoming a physician assistant. But don't let the title fool you! This book is not only about one PA's experience in medicine with his patience. It provides an allegorical narrative of life's challenges and surprises and how every decision and encounter leads to something that is meant to be. Appropriately, Seth provides humorous but realistic accounts of how carelessness and lack of communication steered by stereotype and society can play such a role in misunderstandings and misdiagnosing in a professional field. This allows the reader to become more aware and present when visiting a practitioner and to also become more empathetic of treatment providers and the ethical guidelines they must follow. Lastly, Seth's timeline of his role as a musician also provides a interesting juxtaposition between science and art through Seth's narrative of medicine and music. Overall, a wonderful read! I highly recommend the purchase, especially for the price and quality!

A truly enjoyable read! True Tales provides an up-close and personal insight into the work of Physician Assistants. Informative yet far from dry, True Tales is written in a clear and compelling style, with a great deal of affection, the occasional jaundiced eye, and a pleasant low-key sense of humor. The author, himself an experienced Physician Assistant, recounts his most memorable episodes with the patients he has helped over the years and the medical doctors he has worked with. These short, captivating medical tales are interlaced with the author’s brief recollections of his experiences as a professional musician, and these provide an intriguing counterpoint. I thoroughly enjoyed them all.

Have not read the entire book, but found and perused excellent selected preview content (significant sections, on another website). Expect to order this book soon.

I am not a physician, clinician, nor mental health professional.

However, due to dire circumstances, I needed good sound practical information about the illness, precipitating factors, metabolic issues, differential diagnosis, neurological and neurochemical aspects.

Found more here than I expected.

It gave me perspective, understanding, and more hope; there is a history of the syndrome in medicine and psychiatry, clinical tables of causes, tests, and treatments, case histories.

While a complex medical condition that is not well understood, there are good treatment options.

Catatonia is underappreciated

The book is well written, with many case histories scattered throughout to round off the theoretical parts. Comprehensive enough not to miss out on major points yet not too broad-stroked to get lost in theory. Should be very useful for clinical practice. Max Fink delivered a small masterpiece with this one by pairing up-to-date science with rather classical, european-inspired clinical writing.

DSM criteria do not provide good diagnostic guidelines for catatonia and thus, perhaps, we are missing out on too many cases. A must read for the mental health professional.

A Glitch in the Matrix Binding

I adore this volume of Matrix Comics. I never read them online, but after seeing all three movies again recently (and Animatrix), these comics are a wonderful supplement to anyone wanting more... or wanting more clarification. The artwork is fantastic and diverse, and the writing is odd and strangely filled with truths as well as more questions on existence. Considering that many of the stories were written before the first Matrix film hit theaters makes these stories more intriguing and creative. I love the artists and writers who signed on to work on this project, and I can't wait to get Volume 2.

My biggest gripe with Volume 1 is that the trade paperback began falling apart on the first reading. Perhaps I was a bit too rough (which I don't think I was), but considering that I owned it for 5 minutes before the pages of the first story began coming loose means it was not properly bound. I'm a little gentle Asian guy, much like the Keymaker (but I'm not that old... yet).

So before I had finished reading the third story, I got frustrated by my slowly-page-flaking book and carefully opened the book wide every two pages to assist in letting the rest of the pages "fall out" with a little help. It took a bit of care and restraint, but I took the whole 160 pages out very carefully over about an hour (while watching TV) and then took it to Kinko's to have it bound with plastic coil. That cost $5, but was worth it to be able to read it in one piece again. Nevertheless, the pages are high-quality and should hold up quite well now.

I highly suggest this trade paperback for anyone who enjoyed the first Matrix film... and perhaps if you didn't like the sequels, then perhaps this trade will help foster your desire to go back and give them another chance with a greater appreciation of the world the Brothers created from the beginning. And be prepared to take your trade to Kinko's for minor repairs (that are well-worth having done).

Excellent expansion of the Matrix mythology

Like the "Animatrix" shorts, this book is a clever expansion into the Matrix universe -- 12 comic book stories (well... 11 comic book stories and one prose short story) that tell new tales playing with the toys the Wachowskis created. It's not essential reading for people who are fans of the movies but just want to know what's going on, but most of the stories in this book are clever and inventive in their own right.
Ted McKeever's entry may be the best in the book -- the story of a woman who, when given a choice between a blue pill and a red pill, chose the blue. The Wachowskis chime in with their own story, about the robot B1-66ER, whose murder of its owner sparked the first war between humans and machines -- this story in particular tied in with The Animatrix. Neil Gaiman, one of the best writers on the planet these days, did a short story with a couple of illustrations rather than a comic book story. His tale, about a man forced to live several lives in the Matrix, plays with the nature of time the way the films play with the nature of reality. It's one of the standouts.
A couple of the stories are just so-so -- John Van Fleet and Bill Sienkiwicz, I'm afraid, didn't add too much to the world of the Matrix, but the rest of the stories are fantastic. Recommended for anyone who wants to delve deeper into this still-fascinating world.

More of a curiousity...

I found most of the stories in this book to be kind of average. The Neil Gaiman story was pretty good. As for the illustrations that accompanied it, I thought the first illustrations were the best.

Ted McKeever's story is very good because it treats the Matrix like the real world with a character that has great depth for a short piece of fiction. And the art was very original for this story, too.

I also liked "Hunters and Collectors", but I'm a sucker for any loose analogies or retellings of Melville's classic story.

The art, for the most part of this book is great. It's the writing that doesn't perform as well as I expected. Most of the stories don't take any chances or take you to different ground in the Matrix world, with the exception of McKeever & Gaiman's stories.

I'd recommend the book as a curiosity piece to anyone's library.
