Book in Excellent Condition - Publisher's Design Could be Better

Book is in like new condition and at a fraction of the new price. No issues with condition or description of book but other teacher's editions tend to lay out the problems and answers a bit better. Teacher tips and guides in the large margin mean the actual pages are very small and the solutions are on every page as opposed to the back of the book or on the next page so it's not possible to work through with the student before referring to the answer.

About the Author
Dr. Manas A. Pathak received a BTech degree in computer science from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur, India, in 2006, and MS and PhD degrees from the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in 2009 and 2012 respectively. His PhD thesis on "Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning for Speech Processing" was published as a monograph in the Springer best thesis series. His research received significant press coverage, including articles in the Economist and MIT Tech Review. He has many years of experience with data analysis using the R programming language. He is currently working as a staff software engineer at @WalmartLabs.

Unobjectionable book, terrible value for money

Springer employees who decided to charge a hundred bucks for an unremarkable, thin - only 150 pages! - introduction to R are clearly out of their minds. Let them sort out their problems - the book's author ought to get involved, as this pricing is guaranteed to kill sales of his book - and check out "R in Action" by Robert Kabacoff or "R for Everyone" by Jared Lander instead.

UPD. With the benefit of a little more life experience, I would say: don't spend your time on *any* R book. Python is the way to go.

I thought Deepa Iyer's new book, We Too Sing America: South Asian, Arab, Muslim, and Sikh Immigrants Shape Our Multiracial Future, would be about positive and jarring cultural contributions from immigrants, how their literature, music, myths, cooking, clothing, and cultural practices are merging with and influencing wider U.S. culture. I think that would be a good book. Maybe someone's written it.

This, too, is a good book, and I recommend it. But it is mostly about the all-too-familiar story of post-911 prejudice, racism, violence, and police profiling and abuse, with a particular focus on South Asians. As an opponent of murder in any form, my first response to this topic is usually: Take the guns away! Hatred doesn't kill people -- hatred in people with guns kills people! But of course I'd love to take the hatred away as well and get the gun deaths down to accidents, suicides, and non-hate crimes.

I admit some uncertainty as to how we can identify a gun murder as free of hate. Here's how Iyer describes hate crimes:

"Hate violence affects everyone in America. A hate crime affects not only the person being targeted but the entire community to which that person belongs. Acts of hate violence can disrupt and affect even those who do not belong [to] the community being directly targeted, as we witnessed in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, where non-Sikhs also experienced fear and anxiety in the wake of the massacre."

Of course, that sounds almost identical to the effects of a non-hate school shooting. A value to be found in distinguishing crimes motivated by, for example, hatred of Muslims, lies in the consequent ability to report on and know how widespread that phenomenon is. Does badmouthing Muslims encourage shooting them? Does shooting them encourage discriminating against them? We cannot study and address these matters if we don't identify them. And of course, fearing being shot for living in a country whose government has been purchased by the NRA, is not exactly the same as fearing being shot for being a Muslim and living in a country whose government has been purchased by the NRA. Hatred of part of your identity can make you want to hide that identity and/or resent the suggestion that you should do so and/or internalize the idea of inferiority, etc.

On the other hand, hate crimes laws don't just produce data. Neither do they do anything to reduce racism or other bigotry or to address underlying insecurities and grievances. What they do, as Iyer points out, is increase long sentences in the U.S. mass incarceration system.

Much of the work that Iyer describes being undertaken by community groups in support of abused minorities and crime victims involves attempting to tweak the flood of sewage spewing forth from the corporate media. She urges reporters not to talk about non-Muslim people having been mistaken for Muslims when they've been attacked. Her reason is that this could be taken to imply that it's all right to attack Muslims. That sounds crazy, but of course she is right that that could happen. Why, then, does locking people up for additional years or decades because they killed while racist not risk implying that it's OK to kill while not racist? It seems no more crazy.

The permanent U.S. war on the Middle East has fed the streams of both private and police hate crimes, and that war has trained many to believe that, in fact, it is OK to kill only while believing in racism and bigotry. Members of the military cannot avoid thinking that, while killing was wrong all through their childhood, something has suddenly made it acceptable when they are ordered to engage in it. For many the dehumanizing tactic that allows them to obey their orders is racism. Such racism at home, Iyer argues, enables the United States to keep going to war.

And what about the endless FBI frame-ups, the profiling, the deportations, and all the racist abuse by "law enforcement" -- why aren't these hate crimes? Don't they set examples and influence the broader culture? If someone in Germany proposes immigration policies resembling those of the United States they are immediately denounced for racism and hatred.

Iyer's book is full of heart-wrenching stories of raging racist hatred and violence, and the suffering it creates. She also proposes some good ideas rarely heard about in the corporate media, including reparations for the victims of post-911 state bigotry, on the model of reparations for the victims of the Japanese-American internment camps.

What really breaks my heart in reading so many accounts of the sort of nastiness that has just helped lead that young man whose school clock project was labeled a bomb to leave the United States for someplace less hostile, is the focus of the corrective work on trying to influence the corporate media. We all know how awful the corporate media is, how little it is turned into a force for good, and what minor partial tweaks are proclaimed as victories by activists.

We need a communications system that ceases to condone hatred or violence, that includes all voices in its communications, and that condemns cruelty -- whether public or private -- without exception.

Deepa Iyer's gem of a book narrates how Muslim, South Asian, and Middle Eastern communities have resisted profiling and Islamaphobia since 9/11. Through the stories of Sikhs who suffered violence and horrific loss then turned to activism, Muslims who organize in their communities in the face of tremendous possible risk, and activists who stand in solidarity with other communities of color, Iyer has ensured that this book is not an exercise in academia or ivory tower research. It is a testament to the strength and stories of communities who continue to struggle for change. We Too Sing America is a moving and timely book. A must read.

This is by far the best illustrated reference on the uniforms and equipment of the German soldier in WWII that I have ever seen. What I find particularly fascinating about this book is that every item depicted (in astoundingly clear color photographs) comes from the personal collection of the author (which must rival or surpass the collections of many museums.) The section on uniforms shows us clear views of Wermacht underwear, safety pins, and shoe trees as well as the usual blouses, camouflage smocks and greatcoats. The weapons section has brass fuses for anti-personnel mines, the instruction booklet for the panzerfaust, and the cardboard ammuntion boxes for the 98k rifle showing the labels and how the cartridges were packed inside. The health and hygiene section boasts evacuation labels (tags for the wounded) toothbrushes and even condoms. I am sure this is not a complete catalogue of Mr. Saiz's collection, but he has chosen his examples wisely and taken pains to have it all photographed with an eye to imparting the important details.
The descriptions and notes are concise, clear and supply history, insight into manufacture, and an explanation of normal usage. For example; a field dressing set in an inner pocket is not merely shown, it is noted that "the smaller bandage was used to wad the bullet entry wound while the other was to cover the exit wound--"
A must-have for militaria collectors, re-enactors, illustrators and costumers. It goes on my shelf alongside "The U.S. War Department Handbook on German Military Forces" (Louisiana State University Press 1990 [reprint of a WWII government text,) "Military Forces of the Third Reich" (Wild Mook #39 World Photo Press 1980,) and "Soldat" volumes I & II by Cyrus A. Lee (Pictorial Histories Publishing Company 1988.)

Incredible Collection on German Soldiers of WWII

This is a phenomenal book. It displays and explains in some detail the uniforms, equipment, and personal effects of German soldiers in World War II. Items are often shown from several angles, with close-ups of certain features. Variations in different items are also shown. The pictures themselves are sharp and clear, showing great detail.

(By the way. Don't be misled by the cover photo, the pictures of the actual items in the book are in color. There are not many black and white photos in the book and those that are used are put there simply for comparison purposes.)

Most amazingly, the items pictured generally look to be in new, or like-new, condition. The book is almost like a catalog in this respect. It is sure to become an essential, if not the essential, resource book of its kind.

The single best photo essay on the life of the typical Soldat!

I cannot understand why anyone would give this book less than five stars. It is exactly what its title implies - an in-depth and exhaustive look at the everyday details of a typical WWII German infantry soldier, and nothing more. The photos are extraordinary and every little aspect of what the typical German soldat encountered and dealt with in everyday life are laid out in detail with full color photos. Everything from his foot powders to his snacks, to every aspect of uniforms and equipment, it's all covered here with wonderful photos. If you're a collector this is a magnificent book, and if you're a WWII reenactor, this is solid gold! I'd dare say this is the BEST one-stop reference book for getting a living history impression of a WWII German soldier down to perfection. I highly recommend this one, I don't know how it could've been done any better.

Convenient and helpful, but not a "Complete Daily Curriculum"

I have a three year old daughter, and while this book is oriented more towards preschool groups as opposed to one on one with a child, it was still very useful.

I like how the activities were grouped into different types of skills (e.g. music, art, gross motor skills) as well as into different themes (e.g. My Body, the colour Blue, Christmas). The suggestion of stories to read was also very useful, and I like the fact that it has a tonne of nursery rhymes and singsongs in there as well.

My problem is it is titled as "The Complete Daily Curriculum", but it is not formatted in a way that helps it be used as such. There's no suggestions of how long different activities will take which would help in planning the activities during the day, and there's a lot of items mentioned that it is assumed you have. A little recommended shopping list at the end of each topic would be incredibly useful.

Additionally, some of the activities are interesting, however the majority can be found for free on the internet.

I think it is worth buying for the convenience of having them grouped by theme and skill, however not if you are just looking for more ideas or want a curriculum set out for home schooling a preschool-aged child.

A little simple...

I love the focus on multiple intelligences... but when we have young children, we could do many more meaningful, real life studies. I got the earlier edition from the library, and it seemed to have a lot more useful ideas. For example the themes are colors, shapes, songs, fairy tales... I will definitely use some of the activities, but I want to expose my kids to these ideas on a daily, integrated basis and open their minds to much more interesting ideas. However, there is a theme on Choices, which I am very excited to explore.

Great idea book

I purchased this book to help my Pre-School age Son with learning. This book is full of ideas, Songs, Poems, Nursey Rhymes. I personally would never call this a Complete daily curriculum but this book is very helpful. I look forward to making up a couple work stations for my Son to help him learn thru discovery. This book is perfect becasue my Son has some special needs when it comes to learning and the local school system only offers 1/2 day preschool 4 days a week.

Jamin Goggin (PhD candidate, University of Wales Trinity Saint David) is a pastor at Saddleback Church. An Evangelical Reading of Spiritual Classics Should Be Both Humble and Bold

In contemporary America, many people describe themselves as "spiritual, not religious." They are interested in God, prayer, and spiritual disciplines, but not in dogma or denomination. They are critical of religious people who, to them, seem concerned only with the finer points of doctrine and weekly attendance at a specific type of Christian church.

Evangelical Christians--including Pentecostals--need to listen to this critique, even as they disagree with it. The disagreement part is easy: Spirituality and religion cannot be separated so easily because what we believe and how we live are inseparable. The listening part is harder, however, because it involves recognition that many American churches--including, too often, our own--are spiritually dead. This deadness, which often manifests as persnickety dogmatism and denominational pride, in turn feeds the desire for a spirituality decoupled from organized religion.

Authentic renewal requires us to recouple religion and spirituality, faith and life, and doctrine, ecclesial communion, and vibrant experience. The 1978 publication of Richard J. Foster's Celebration of Discipline signaled the desire of many evangelicals to do precisely that. But given how Foster drew on spiritual classics from across Christian history, it also signaled the need for evangelicals to pay ecumenical attention to the best of what Christians have said and written about spirituality across the ages.

This poses a dilemma for evangelicals, however. As a movement, we are part of the "Great Tradition" of Christianity, which affirms the Trinity, Incarnation, and Atonement, among a host of doctrines held in common. Within that tradition, however, we are critical of some of the doctrinal emphases and spiritual practices of our fellow traditioners. As Western Christians, aspects of our doctrine and spirituality are distinct from and stand in tension with those of Eastern, i.e., Orthodox, Christians. As Protestants, we are critical of aspects of Catholicism: e.g., papal authority, soteriology, Mariology, sacramentalism. As evangelical Protestants, we have our own disagreements with mainline Protestants. And within evangelicalism, we have running disagreements too: Arminianism vs. Calvinism, credobaptism vs. paedobaptism, Pentecostalism vs. cessationism.

How, then, can evangelical Christians appropriate the riches of the Christian tradition without compromising our own contributions to and critique of it?

Answering that question is the agenda of Reading the Christian Spiritual Classics: A Guide for Evangelicals, edited by Jamin Goggin and Kyle Strobel. As the editors note in their Introduction, they have organized authors' contributions around four themes: "why should spiritual classics be read, how should spiritual classics be read, what are these spiritual classics and who are the people behind them" (p. 11).

I will not review each of the chapters in the book, lest I simply recapitulate the book's contents and make this review too long to be useful. However, by way of evaluation, I will say that I learned something from each chapter, found the book as a whole to be quite excellent, and was motivated--by reading it--not merely to read further in the spiritual classics but also to love God more, which is the ultimate and unifying point of all Christian spiritual classics.

Having said that, however, I will focus on Fred Sanders's contribution, "Reading Spiritual Classics as Evangelical Protestants" (pp. 149-166), which directly addresses the dilemma I raised above. Sanders counsels evangelicals to read Christian spiritual classics with an "open but cautious" attitude (p. 149), what he later terms "principled eclecticism" (p. 160). This is nothing new, for as Sanders notes, "The evangelical book-recommending network is as old as evangelicalism itself; the evangelical movement seems to have been born in a flurry of literary recommendations" (pp. 151-152). This included not only Protestant, Puritan, and Pietist spiritual classics, but also classics from other Christian communions, such as the Puritans' recommendation of Bernard of Clairvaux on the Song of Songs, or John Wesley's recommendation of The Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis.

Sanders summarizes a specifically evangelical reading of Christian spiritual classics as being "for the gospel" (p. 150). Here's his longer description:

"We read widely in the classics, presupposing the gospel in the sense that we know what it is before we start reading, and we will recognize it when we come across it in a spiritual classic. We are guided by the gospel, so that we will immediately know when it is missing from what we are reading. We seek out the gospel, meaning that we read in such a way that can find the good news even when it is present in a fragmentary, disguised or distorted way. And we are jealous for the gospel, meaning that we cannot be satisfied by any disguised, distorted or otherwise deficient presentation of the gospel. If we are to go shopping in the spiritual classics with this kind of attitude of freedom and potential criticism, we had better be appropriately humble about how much we have to learn, but also appropriately bold about confessing that we know what an evangelical reading of the classics would look like" (p. 160).

This humble-and-bold approach should characterize an evangelical reading not merely of Christian spiritual classics, but also our life as Christians more generally. We know what we know, but there is much that we don't know and need to learn. Therefore we engage the Christian tradition--an the world more generally--in conversation, both listening and speaking, learning and teaching, so that the gospel may be experienced and lived out in ever-increasing measure.

Given the anti-historical stance of many of my fellow Pentecostals, who sometimes give the impression that the Spirit jumped over the centuries from the Day of Pentecost directly to Azusa Street, this humble boldness is a necessary lesson, even if hard to admit. But it must be learned if we are to affirm the truth of Scripture itself: "[the Father] will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever--the Spirit of truth (John 14:16-17). As Pentecostals, to deny that we can learn from Christian spiritual classics is tantamount to denying that God kept his promise.

I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend Reading the Spiritual Classics: A Guide for Evangelicals. In addition to 14 topical essays, it includes an extensive list of suggested readings, both primary readings of spiritual classics and secondary readings about them. My only complaint is that the two-page subject and author index is too short and woefully incomplete.

A long-needed resource

I set aside the first week of July as some stay-cation space for myself and our family. One of the gifts of that week was the arrival of a copy of Reading the Christian Spiritual Classics (InterVarsity Academic) edited by Jamin Goggin and Kyle Strobel. It is a collection of essays by various authors on this theme.

I especially enjoyed Steve Porter's "Why Should We Read Spiritual Classics," in which he suggests three theological reasons to engage the classics: 1) for insight into the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, 2) for insight into the lived experience of sanctification and 3) benefitting from trustworthy historic voices from others in the body of Christ of which we are part (my summaries, not his).

Evan Howard's "The Schools of Christian Spirituality" provides a succinct and insightful overview of movements or schools of Christian spirituality beginning with the desert fathers all the way up to modern day Evangelicalism. I found it a very helpful survey. It helps me get a lay of the landscape of two millennia of spirituality and the various "schools" or communities out of which key writings emerged.

Finally, I especially enjoyed the final five essays in the section titled "How to Read the Spiritual Classics," which deal with 1) the church fathers and mothers, 2) the desert fathers, 3) the medieval traditions, 4) reformation traditions and 5) Puritan and Pietistic traditions. Again, similar to Howard's essay on schools of spirituality, these essays drilled down a bit into these eras in terms of history, theological context, interpretive framework, key figures/writings and use in the church today.

I'm confident this work will find a home in many seminary courses on spiritual formation themes. It would also serve well as an introduction to someone wanted to dive deeper into the rich treasure of classic Christian spiritual writings.

Reading the Christian Spiritual Classics is a collection of essays providing a broad overview to the practice of reading various Christian classics. The book is a composed of fourteen essays broken up into four parts and a helpful list of suggested readings at the conclusion. The first part is an apologetic entitled Approaching Spiritual Classics, answering why these books are worthwhile for spiritual growth and of value to evangelical Christians. The second section, The Spiritual Classics Tradition, introduces the reader to the types of literature, historical content, and theological variation within pieces considered classics. As the subtitle of the book indicates it is specifically intended for evangelical Christians and part three, Reading Evangelically focuses on this project. Cautions to keep in mind while reading Catholic and Orthodox spirituality are addressed in chapters seven and eight respectively as well as an overview of all classics given in chapter nine. Approaches are recommended for deriving spiritual benefit from these streams while paying attention to the sometimes significant theological differences. The chapters of part four focus on each historical tradition from which we draw spiritual classics. Major figures from The Church Fathers and Mothers (chapter 10) to The Puritan and Pietistic Traditions (chapter 14) are elucidated, giving context and advice for the modern evangelical reader. The organization of the book is essentially from "why study these classics" to "how to study these classics", concluding with "what classics to read".

Evaluation:

I am no stranger to Christian spiritual classics. I have read old books, or selections from old books, many times along my evangelical Christian journey. Yet this work was quite helpful for me even as I read it for the purposes of this review. It provides a framework for understanding classics regarding their individual purpose as well as how they fit together within all of church history. The format, moving from lesser to greater specificity, is helpful for the reader.

As a collection of writings, it is difficult to speak sufficiently about each selection. Suffice to say, the authors represent a spectrum, from devotional and conversational to straightforwardly academic. Each contributor's voice comes through his or her piece, some are more cautious than others regarding the reading of classics with divergent doctrinal issues. This variation gives balance to the work. On a personal note, it was welcome to once again "hear the voices" of some of my former professors through reading their contributions to the work. I imagine that anyone familiar with any of the contributors would have a similar experience.

As noted above, the question "why should I read the Christian classics?" is addressed. However, the work is largely intended for Christians who are already interested in the spiritual benefits of reading the classics. This is, perhaps, the only deficiency of the work. It is an excellent guide, for those who have already decided to read the classics, but for those who have not decided, the motivation may not manifest. In some ways the book stands alone as a historic overview, while it seems to have been intended to actively motivate the reader to partake in the spiritual growth to be found in the classics. The contributors who succeed in motivating the reader generally utilize two devices. First, they offer lengthy quotes from the classic figures they are referring to, thus showing the reader rather than telling. Secondly, and even more effectively, they share personal stories of the growth that occurred in their spiritual journey through engaging in the classics. Though excellent as it is, the work would have benefitted if these two devices were utilized more often.
