The story behind one of WindClan's greatest leaders.

This review contains a few mild spoilers. :)

I thought this was a great book. The beginning was a bit slow, but it picked up. I thought it was so cool how Tallstar and Jake were best friends: I had no idea Tallstar knew Firestar's father! I also liked the relationship between Tallstar and Shrewclaw. It reminded me a bit of Firestar and Dustpelt. They were never "friends", but it was easy to see that they would have died for each other.

I also liked how Tallstar's character was developed. In the series, he's wise and peaceful, so I assumed he would be that way in his Super Edition. Not so! Tallstar was mean, lean, and hungry for revenge. All until a very surprising twist. ;)

I highly recommend this book. It wasn't as good as Crookedstar's Promise, but I enjoyed it and I'm very glad I read it. May StarClan light your path!

Good Story, Good Super Edition!

After reading this Super Edition, I believe Tallstar's Revenge should be read before Bluestar's Prophecy then start the first Warriors series since Tallstar is older than Bluestar.

As for the story, very good. I like seeing Tallkit growing up to Talltail then attaining leader as Tallstar. He wasn't a kit and young warrior I thought he would be since Tallstar was always noble. However, a Warrior needs struggles to become a great leader and Tallstar did have that in his younger life.

I just wanted to thank the Erin's for letting the readers get to know Jake, Firestar's father. I had always wondered about him with first mention of Jake in Bluestar's Prophecy with Pinestar becoming a kittypet his last life. Jake really does sound like Firestar so I can easily see the relationship. It's wonderful Tallstar made a life long friend like Jake that shaped the lives of the Warriors, Tallstar definitely saw a friend when he eventually met Firestar due to Sandgrose's prophecy during Tallstar's leader ceremony.

I highly recommend the story. I loved the story and hated that it came to an end. Luckily I can always read it again!

Awesome Book, Need a Few Changes

(SPOLIER ALERT - DO NOT READ WITHOUT STARCLAN'S PERMISSION)

Over all, Tallstar's Revenge was AMAZING, and I'm not joking. Tallkit was always trying to prove himself to Shrewkit, with calling him Wormkit in the expectation of Tallkit becoming a tunneler like his father, Sandgrose. Shrewclaw was never a friend to Talltail, but their loyalty between the two was far better than any kind of friendship in WindClan.

The end, however, did seem a little rushed from the time Talltail returned. He did achieve his goal, but not in the way he wanted it to end. We still have no idea how his deputyship was, or how he got it. Reedfeather did have his shoulder injury that wasn't healing properly, but Talltail wasn't ready for the deputy position at the time. Heatherstar was right in appointing Talltail, for example, based on his adventure, courage and his loyalty to WindClan, Jake, Sandgrose, and Sparrow. The ending of Tallstar's Revenge reminded me of how The Last Hope ended, seeing how the Final Battle was rushed between Firestar and Tigerstar, and Firestar's dying far too quickly.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves Warriors, who love the thrill of the wind between their whiskers, the blood pumping through them as they charge down to face the enemy, who relax in the sun during greenleaf, and the thrill of entertaining kits on their first wonder around camp

About the Author
John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) was the first Anglican bishop of Liverpool. Ryle was born at Macclesfield, and was educated at Eton and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he was Craven Scholar in 1836. After holding a curacy at Exbury in Hampshire, he became rector of St Thomas's, Winchester (1843), rector of Helmingham, Suffolk (1844), vicar of Stradbroke (1861), honorary canon of Norwich (1872), and dean of Salisbury (1880). However before taking the latter office, he was advanced to the new see of Liverpool, where he remained until his resignation, which took place three months before his death at Lowestoft. His appointment to Liverpool was at the recommendation of the outgoing Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. Ryle was a strong supporter of the evangelical school and a critic of Ritualism. He was a writer, pastor and an evangelical preacher. Among his longer works are Christian Leaders of the Eighteenth Century (1869), Expository Thoughts on the Gospels (7 vols, 1856 69), Principles for Churchmen (1884). Ryle was an athlete who rowed and played Cricket for Oxford, where he took a first class degree in Greats and was offered a college fellowship (teaching position) which he declined. The son of a wealthy banker, he was destined for a career in politics before choosing a path of ordained ministry. While hearing Ephesians 2 read in church in 1838, he felt a spiritual awakening and was ordained by Bishop Sumner at Winchester in 1842. For 38 years he was a parish vicar, first at Helmingham and later at Stradbrooke, in Suffolk. He became a leader of the evangelical party in the Church of England and was noted for his doctrinal essays and polemical writings. In 1880, at age 64, he became the first bishop of Liverpool, at the recommendation of Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. He retired in 1900 at age 83 and died later the same year. He is buried in the All Saints' Church, Childwall, Liverpool. In his diocese, he formed a clergy pension fund for his diocese and built over forty churches. Controversially, he emphasized raising clergy salaries ahead of building a cathedral for his new diocese. Ryle was described as having a commanding presence and vigorous in advocating his principles albeit with a warm disposition. He was also credited with having success in evangelizing the blue collar community.

Challenging, encouraging - great read!

A most outstanding book and excellent read. Ryle was the Bishop of Liverpool in the late 1700s and his writing is alive with the Word of God and the intensity of the Puritans. This little salvo is a challenge to all to pray - to those who don't know the Lord to cry out for God's mercy and redemption and for those who do to cry out for God's continued hand of protection and provision in their own lives as well as for His grace and mercy in the lives of others. Ryle is straightforward in his approach on this subject asking repeatedly and simply - Do You Pray?

Yet he goes beyond the question to the meat of the issue giving strong arguments for why prayer, the most neglected duty in religion according to Ryle, is so necessary for the spiritual well-being of an individual. Once he has made his point, and made it well, Ryle turns his attention to how a person should pray. This work of prayer, according to Ryle, is so often neglected because it is such an arduous task cutting against the flesh and standing (or kneeing in this case) in direct opposition and defiance of Satan himself. Ryle encourages the Christian to pray with reverence and humility, spiritually, as a regular part of their business of life, with all perseverance, in earnestness, in faith, with boldness, with fullness, on behalf of others, with thankfulness and with watchfulness over one's prayers. He writes this to state his position on the importance of prayer: "Tell me what a man's prayers are, and I will soon tell you the state of his soul. Prayer is the spiritual pulse."

I am gaining in my appreciation for the works of J.C. Ryle - wonderfully written, challenging, yet encouraging to the heart of a true follower of Christ. Here is a man that walked with the Lord in humility and with passion and reading his works must be Timothy getting a letter from Paul. I would highly recommend A Call to Prayer to anyone wanting to know why to pray or how to pray.

Direct and Practical

In this short booklet, Ryle charges the reader with the necessity of prayer. He cuts through the excuses and the pretense with the simple question: "Do you pray?" Ryle's style is concise and immanently readable. He argues that prayer or the lack of prayer is the single greatest barometer for a person's status before the Lord. For "[t]o be prayerless is to be without Christ, without God, without grace, without hope, and without heaven," (p.2).

I am very thankful for having read a call to prayer by J.C. Ryle. Ryle is Bold,encouraging, and affectionate in his earnest invitation for all children of God to come before Him in prayer. Prayer is crucial in the life of the believer and it is evidence that one has been born from above as Ryle mentioned. I agree completely with Ryle when he says that prayer is the most neglected duty in the church because I am evidence of this charge. I pray, but I don not really pray as Ryle would say.

To consider how we in the new covenant have direct access to God is overwhelming and humbling. Men of old could have only dreamed of such access but we have the privilege and we must take advantage of it. To be allowed to speak with the living God of the Universe is beyond comprehension and to recognize my negligence in my communing with Him is heartbreaking.

Ryle has greatly encouraged and challenged my prayer life and communion with my God. I know I do not pray like men in the Bible or great men in church history butit is my hearts desire to pray in this way. I want to know the Godhead intimately and prayer is the means to the throne of grace. It is necessary that I give more time to prayer knowing that prayer is one of the means of grace God has blessed those whom he has
adopted with. Ryle has encouraged me to pray with reverence, humility, perseverance and earnestness, in faith, in boldness, on behalf of others, with thankfulness, and watchfulness.

Emerging master story-teller

There are two reasons I’m becoming a big Tony Tremblay fan. The first is the honesty of his prose – no showing off here, just clear and riveting narratives. The second thing is his uncanny ability to under-tell the tricky parts of horror without losing the impact. And when he under-tells the high adrenaline stuff, it not only lets the reader suspend disbelief, it allows a delicious psychological depth to his characters and their motives. Good examples of the latter in this collection are “The Burial Board,” “Stardust,” “The Black Dress” and “The Soldier’s Wife.” He keeps the camera pointed at shadows and echoes, and I love that. I agree with McIlveen that “Something New” may be the collection’s best. Tremblay plays with the redemptive theme of forgiveness masterfully in that gem. But probably the major theme in many of the stories is the usurping of characters wills as they are driven to acts that are ironic, evil and revelatory.

A new voice in horror has arrived

A new, confident voice breaks out with a first collection of stories that leaves space for empathy and humanity between the horrors. It's very obvious the writer has read an enormous amount - which of course all writers should - and absorbed the lessons of many masters. Looking forward to future work from a writer who is not "up and coming" but has arrived, right here and now!

A fine debut collection of short horror from Tony Tremblay

I've been reading Tony Tremblay for a few years now, but this is the first time I've read any of his fiction. Most of what I've read previously are his posts on Facebook. Tons of them. Tony has quite the presence on social media and that's a good thing, particularly if you're a fan of literary horror. Tony's support of the genre is nothing short of legendary. If you're a fan of Horror, as I am, he's certainly worth following on Facebook.

When I saw he was releasing his first book of short stories, I had to see what he had to offer, and I'm happy to report it's a book worth getting excited about. The Seeds of Nightmares features thirteen stories, some previously published, many new to this collection, all entertaining in their individual ways.

One of the nice things about this collection is the series of author's notes before each story, giving the reader some insight into how the story came about and it's history.

The Strange Saga of Mattie Dyer - Weird westerns are a lot of fun and when you mix in a bit of H.P. Lovecraft, well, get ready for a wild ride, and just when you think the worst is over...oh, no!

The Old Man - A bit of noir and a clever tale of mistaken identity.

The Burial Board - A burial board, meant to keep the body of a couple's deceased daughter until the ground thaws for internment, seems to have mystical powers.

Something New - A haunting fantasy story of a man who comes home to find his wife in the arms of another man.

These include: building on calculus basics; focusing on mathematical proof, structure and language; staying with the basics; offering many examples and many solved exercises; and gradually increasing technical sophistication. ... There are plenty of exercises. They tend to follow a pattern where an exercise that is not completely straightforward is broken into multiple parts to guide the student to a solution.

About the Author

Paul Zorn was born in India and completed his primary and secondary schooling there. He did his undergraduate work at Washington University in St. Louis and his Ph.D., in complex analysis, at the University of Washington, Seattle. Since 1981 he has been on the mathematics faculty at St. Olaf College, in Northfield, Minnesota, where he now chairs the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science.

Very basic real analysis

Pedagogically this is a fine text: the basic ideas of limits, continuity, Cauchy sequences, convergence, et cetera are explained very well. But there is little coverage of convergence tests for infinite series (e.g., even the root test is missing). And there is no coverage of power series. Two other texts that are close to this book in spirit and level of exposition are Howie's "Real Analysis" (Springer) and Dangello and Seyfried's "Introductory Real Analysis" (Houghton Mifflin). Yet both have more coverage of infinite series and both cover power series. Zorn's book might be fine for a weak class or for an "analysis for liberal arts majors" kind of course. But I doubt it will suffice as the text for a first course in analysis for prospective math majors.

About the Author
Carson McCullers (1917-1967) was the author of numerous works of fiction and nonfiction, including The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, The Member of the Wedding, Reflections in a Golden Eye, and Clock Without Hands. Born in Columbus, Georgia, on February 19, 1917, she became a promising pianist and enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York when she was seventeen, but lacking money for tuition, she never attended classes. Instead she studied writing at Columbia University, which ultimately led to The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, the novel that made her an overnight literary sensation. On September 29, 1967, at age fifty, she died in Nyack, New York, where she is buried.

Conflicts and brutality as the Old South slowly dies

Written in 1953, this book explores the racial tensions in a small southern town. The winds of integration are in the air and the Old South is dying. The story is told through several characters. There's a pharmacist dying of leukemia who struggles with the diagnosis. There's a elderly judge who's a former congressman who really believes that the confederate money hoarded in his attic will some day bring him riches. There's the judge's grandson who sees changes coming. And then there's a young blue-eyed Negro who tries to be accepted.
Carson McCullers is a master of setting the stage for this disturbing tale which is certainly not comfortable to read. Each of the characters is exaggerated but that is her intent. She lays out the conflict with surgical precision and creates a world that doesn't exist any more. It's a brutal world and all the sugar coated Southern niceties just don't help. There's violence in the air. I felt it coming throughout and hoped it wouldn't happen. But the conclusion is inevitable.
Fine book. Fine writing. Recommended.

This is my favorite book by Carson McCullers.

Not as well known as "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter", this is a beautiful story about small town politics and emotions in the South. McCullers has a talent for describing the dark side of humanity, what drives us and why. Emotions run high in this book where conservative judge, African-American piano player, local pharmacist, and others are connected to one another by unusual ties. It is a difficult book to find, highly recommended.

Good...definately good...reads fast and good...

Geez...what can I say about this book? Well...I could start by saying that is was an excellent novel. Being 16 years old and all, this book really explained to me how some of the old southerners thought. They still had pride in the "old south" and it fascinated me that the old judge wanted Confederate money to be made redeemable into US dollars. I just could believe it. It portrayed racist, economic, and political issues in a very believable way. It was, all in all, emotional and it really had every emotion contained within it. At times it was funny. At times is was serious. Sometimes it was happy. Sometimes it was sad. It really gets you going once you read the first 10 pages. I liked it very much and do recommend it to everyone -- regardless of age.

Emotional Lexicons is the first cultural history of terms of emotion found in German, French, and English language encyclopaedias since the late seventeenth century. Insofar as these reference works formulated normative concepts, they documented shifts in the way the educated middle classes were taught to conceptualise emotion by a literary medium targeted specifically to them. As well as providing a record of changing language use (and the surrounding debates), many encyclopaedia articles went further than simply providing basic knowledge; they also presented a moral vision to their readers and guidelines for behaviour. Implicitly or explicitly, they participated in fundamental discussions on human nature: Are emotions in the mind or in the body? Can we "read" another person's feelings in their face? Do animals have feelings? Are men less emotional than women? Are there differences between the emotions of children and adults? Can emotions be "civilised"? Can they make us sick? Do groups feel together? Do our emotions connect us with others or create distance? The answers to these questions are historically contingent, showing that emotional knowledge was and still is closely linked to the social, cultural, and political structures of modern societies.

Emotional Lexicons analyses European discourses in science, as well as in broader society, about affects, passions, sentiments, and emotions. It does not presume to refine our understanding of what emotions actually are, but rather to present the spectrum of knowledge about emotion embodied in concepts whose meanings shift through time, in order to enrich our own concept of emotion and to lend nuances to the interdisciplinary conversation about them.

About the Author

Ute Frevert is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society. From 2003 to 2007 she was professor of German history at Yale University and previously taught History at the Universities of Konstanz, Bielefeld, and the Free University in Berlin. Her research interests include the social and cultural history of the modern period, the history of emotions, gender history, and political history. Some of her best known work has examined the history of women and gender relations in modern Germany, social and medical politics in the nineteenth century, and the impact of military conscription from 1814 to the present day. Ute Frevert is an honorary professor at the Free University in Berlin and member of several scientific advisory boards. In 1998 she was awarded the prestigious Leibniz Prize.

About the Author
Albert M. Craig is the Harvard-Yenching Research Professor of History Emeritus at Harvard University, where he has taught since 1959. A graduate of Northwestern University, he received his Ph.D. at Harvard University. He has studied at Strasbourg University and at Kyoto, Keio, and Tokyo universities in Japan. He is the author of Choshu in the Meiji Restoration (1961), The Heritage of Japanese Civilization (2011), and, with others, of East Asia, Tradition and Transformation (1989). He is the editor of Japan, A Comparative View (1973) and co-editor of Personality in Japanese History (1970), Civilization and Enlightenment: The Early Thought of Fukuzawa Yukichi (2009). He was the director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute. He has also been a visiting professor at Kyoto and Tokyo universities. He has received Guggenheim, Fulbright, and Japan Foundation Fellowships. In 1988 he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government.

William A. Graham is Albertson Professor of Middle Eastern Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and O’Brian Professor of Divinity and Dean in the Faculty of Divinity at Harvard University, where he has taught for thirty-four years. He has directed the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and chaired the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, the Committee on the Study of Religion, and the Core Curriculum Committee on Foreign Cultures. He received his BA in Comparative Literature from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, an A.M. and Ph.D. in History of Religion from Harvard, and studied also in Göttingen, Tübingen, Lebanon, and London. He is former chair of the Council on Graduate Studies in Religion (U.S. and Canada). In 2000 he received the quinquennial Award for Excellence in Research in Islamic History and Culture from the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. He has held John Simon Guggenheim and Alexander von Humboldt research fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among his publications are Beyond the Written Word: Oral Aspects of Scripture in the History of Religion (1987); Divine Word and Prophetic Word in Early Islam (1977–ACLS History of Religions Prize, 1978); and Three Faiths, One God (co-authored, 2003).

Donald Kagan is Sterling Professor of History and Classics at Yale University, where he has taught since 1969. He received the A.B. degree in history from Brooklyn College, the M.A. in classics from Brown University, and the Ph.D. in history from Ohio State University. During 1958—1959 he studied at the American School of Classical Studies as a Fulbright Scholar. He has received three awards for undergraduate teaching at Cornell and Yale. He is the author of a history of Greek political thought, The Great Dialogue (1965); a four-volume history of the Peloponnesian war, The Origins of the Peloponnesian War (1969); The Archidamian War (1974); The Peace of Nicias and the Sicilian Expedition (1981); The Fall of the Athenian Empire (1987); a biography of Pericles, Pericles of Athens and the Birth of Democracy (1991); On the Origins of War (1995); and The Peloponnesian War (2003). He is coauthor, with Frederick W. Kagan, of While America Sleeps (2000). With Brian Tierney and L. Pearce Williams, he is the editor of Great Issues in Western Civilization, a collection of readings. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal for 2002 and was chosen by the National Endowment for the Humanities to deliver the Jefferson Lecture in 2004.

Steven Ozment is McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History at Harvard University. He has taught Western Civilization at Yale, Stanford, and Harvard. He is the author of eleven books. The Age of Reform, 1250—1550 (1980) won the Schaff Prize and was nominated for the 1981 National Book Award. Five of his books have been selections of the History Book Club: Magdalena and Balthasar: An Intimate Portrait of Life in Sixteenth Century Europe (1986), Three Behaim Boys: Growing Up in Early Modern Germany (1990), Protestants: The Birth of A Revolution (1992), The Burgermeister’s Daughter: Scandal in a Sixteenth Century German Town (1996), and Flesh and Spirit: Private Life in Early Modern Germany (1999). His most recent publications are Ancestors: The Loving Family of Old Europe (2001), A Mighty Fortress: A New History of the German People (2004), and “Why We Study Western Civ,” The Public Interest 158 (2005).

Frank M. Turner is John Hay Whitney Professor of History at Yale University and Director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, where he served as University Provost from 1988 to 1992. He received his B.A. degree at the College of William and Mary and his Ph.D. from Yale. He has received the Yale College Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching. He has directed a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute. His scholarly research has received the support of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson Center. He is the author of Between Science and Religion: The Reaction to Scientific Naturalism in Late Victorian England (1974), The Greek Heritage in Victorian Britain (1981), which received the British Council Prize of the Conference on British Studies and the Yale Press Governors Award, Contesting Cultural Authority: Essays in Victorian Intellectual Life (1993), and John Henry Newman: The Challenge to Evangelical Religion (2002). He has also contributed numerous articles to journals and has served on the editorial advisory boards of The Journal of Modern History, Isis, and Victorian Studies. He edited The Idea of a University by John Henry Newman (1996), Reflections on the Revolution in France by Edmund Burke (2003), and Apologia Pro Vita Sua and Six Sermons by John Henry Newman (2008). Between 1996 and 2006 he served as a Trustee of Connecticut College and between 2004 and 2008 as a member of the Connecticut Humanities Council. This concise text offers an introduction to discrete mathematics for undergraduate students in computer science and mathematics. The present volume emphasizes combinatorics, graph theory with applications to some stand network optimization problems, and algorithms to solve these problems.
Chapters 0–3 cover fundamental operations involving sets and the principle of mathematical induction, and standard combinatorial topics: basic counting principles, permutations, combinations, the inclusion-exclusion principle, generating functions, recurrence relations, and an introduction to the analysis of algorithms. Applications are emphasized wherever possible and more than 200 exercises at the ends of these chapters help students test their grasp of the material.
Chapters 4 and 5 survey graphs and digraphs, including their connectedness properties, applications of graph coloring, and more, with stress on applications to coding and other related problems. Two important problems in network optimization ― the minimal spanning tree problem and the shortest distance problem ― are covered in the last two chapters. A very brief nontechnical exposition of the theory of computational complexity and NP-completeness is outlined in the appendix.

Excellent introduction to Discrete Mathematics

I was misled by the low price thinking this would be a bad book. But I was Mathematics. The reason for which I bought this text book is because it has many proofs and in particular it includes the proofs of a couple of theorems I had been looking for. The presentation is formal but clear. The author includes plenty of excercises and answers are provided for odd numbered ones. So far I haven't found errors or typos. The book has enough material to be used in a two semester course sequence. I would give it a relations, total and partial orders, logic, combinatorics, regular languages, graphs, number theory, algorithm analysis and even NP-completeness. This book should be useful for both Math and CS students.

Excellent Text

As with any Dover text, it is important to remember that this text is designed to teach the material, not to coddle the reader. This text provides broad and deep coverage of the various topics that fall under discrete mathematics (set theory, boolean logic, graph theory, etc.) with clarity and simplicity. This book is not designed to help you pass a test, but is instead designed to help you grasp and understand the topic, which it does very well. Easily the best book I own on this topic (I often joke that the author covered my first semester course on discrete math in the first chapter!).

A good supplement, but not a guide for a new learner

This book is full of great examples and loads of practice problems. Its descriptions, for students fairly comfortable with mathematical writing, are concise and no-nonsense, which can be great. It makes a good reference, in that way, but the book doesn't do much to guide your intuition. It's also full of tiny mistakes (seemingly due to rushed editing) that should be no problem for an advanced student or someone working closely with another guide to the subject (a teacher, tutor, or other textbook). But for learners who might struggle with the material, these mistakes in the book can really interrupt understanding. (As a result, I chose not to assign this book to my students.)
