All-In-One reference book for organisational developers and process experts
By M. Rumpler
The book fully satisfies the expectations one can have in a book with the title "Kanban Change Leadership"

The first part spans a bridge from what Kanban is, where its origins are, how it works and what are the possibilities one has when using the Kanban method. The great thing is that it is written without losing ground and slip to esoteric realms.

The book shows all practices and methods as described by David Anderson but adding a lot of value by bridging the gap to practical examples and ideas how to bring the theory to life. Very well placed pieces of Viennese charm make the book at the same time entertaining and informative to read.

The second part adds an important component which is often missing in similar books. The component of how to develop an organisation. It shows traps and pitfalls one could face when working as a change agent. Doing this is important that employees do not "skillfully surf the wave of change". This part of the book serves as memorial and guideline for the change agent to have the do's and don'ts and help to see signs of systemic causes often making change initiatives fail. The essential aspects of people-driven systems are explained with a lot of practical examples without missing the theory behind. The broad experience of the authors made them bring to life a very good overview and interconnection of lots of methods in the necessary depth.

The third part holds a big number of real-world examples that illustrate how to work with the tools and methods described in the first two parts. This is done by depicting real-world scenarios from practical experience of the authors, insights that bring unmatched value to the reader.
The diversity of examples gives a clear view that there is not "the one and only real and non-changeable method" that is the silver bullet. A change initiative is mainly driven by the people involved. Everybody that has led or participated in a change initiative inside a company will for sure find some similarities to things experienced by themselves. This part is a perfect source of ideas when running into problems during a change initiative. It shows how one can deal with situations popping up during a change initiative showing how experts (the authors) have faced this issues. There is no single recipe that fits all situations and this is very well shown in this part where similar issues are faced using different methods depending on the people involved.

As a summary I personally think that this book is the "practical guide" how to realise change initiatives based on the more theoretical book by David Anderson about the Kanban method. It definitely helps people in how to understand the "magic" behind change initiatives and offers lots of tools and methods to be used.

A must-read book for knowledge workers
By B. Pfeifer
The working environment for knowledge workers changes permanently. It requires continuous improvement, learning and leadership to be able to handle this change appropriately. Kanban Change Leadership gives insights how this works.

At the beginning Kanban is explained in detail. The first part of the book describes practices and principles of Evolutionary Change Managements and shows why all these are so important.

Part 2 focusses on Change and Leadership. The authors write about fear, anger sorrows, challenges, aggressions because this is usually what change agents have to deal with.

Part 3 dives deeper into the topic of Change and Leadership and gives the reader ideas of how to change his/her leadership-style to better handle change.

The German version of this book became a must read book for every knowledge worker who wants to improve and face today’s business challenges. Now this is also available for the English speaking world.

My conclusion… “KANBAN rocks”... also for leadership-topics! :-)

A wealth of information, utility and real-life experiences
By Julia W
This is probably the most comprehensive Kanban book (for non-manufacturing systems) since David J Anderson wrote his original work. It is divided into three parts. My favorites were the 1st and 3rd as they are more action oriented, but the entire book is very utilitarian. If you've never given a workshop before, but know these concepts, you could use the suggestions in this book and be on your way with a solid agenda. I loved learning from the experiences of the authors. I know Klaus is always consulting and training so he has no problem pulling from a wealth of examples.

The price of this book may put the casual curious off, but for those who really want to consider Kanban, this book will pay for itself many times over. Consider it a textbook, a reference book that you will use over and over as you continue down your path to continuous improvement.

I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and my colleagues!

Ivory and Bone, by Julie Eshbaugh

[Young Adult Fiction (Ages 12-17)]
[Read by Michael Curran-Dorsano]

Debut author Julie Eshbaugh's sweeping prehistoric fantasy -- with allusions to ''Pride and Prejudice'' -- will enthrall listeners with high-stakes survival, blinding betrayal, and star-crossed love.

Hunting, gathering, and keeping his family safe -- that's the life seventeen-year-old Kol knows. Then bold, enigmatic Mya arrives from the south with her family, and Kol is captivated. He wants her to like and trust him, but any hopes of impressing her are ruined when he makes a careless -- and nearly grave -- mistake. However, there's something more to Mya's cool disdain … a history wrought with loss that comes to light when another clan arrives. With them is Lo, an enemy from Mya's past who Mya swears has ulterior motives.

As Kol gets to know Lo, tensions between Mya and Lo escalate until violence erupts. Faced with shattering losses, Kol is forced to question every person he's trusted. One thing is for sure: this was a war that Mya or Lo -- Kol doesn't know which -- had been planning all along.

With riveting action and illustrative prose that leaps from the page, newcomer Julie Eshbaugh will have listeners mesmerized.

Gr 8 Up—Seventeen-year-old Kol is the oldest son of the High Elder of his clan, and while he and his brother are of marrying age, there are no marriageable women in their clan. The rhythm of Kol's hunter/gatherer life changes, however, when a group from the clan to the south visit to build an alliance—with two eligible unmarried women in their party. Mya, also 17, is beautiful and severe, and she and Kol begin a rocky acquaintance when she saves him from a charging saber-tooth while on a mammoth hunt. Despite his acts of gratitude, Kol cannot read or anticipate Mya's feelings, which makes his confusion about his own feelings even more complex. When Lo, a woman from the clan to the north, arrives in Kol's village with a dark intent, the plot becomes all the more complicated. Eshbaugh packs her debut with a classic love triangle, feuding clans, a well-drawn prehistoric setting, and a handful of fan fiction elements that will appeal to teens. VERDICT Buy this Stone Age, gender-flipped take on Pride and Prejudice if your readers are on the lookout for something compellingly out of the ordinary.—Amy Koester, Learning Experiences Department, Skokie Public Library, IL

From the Back Cover

The only life seventeen-year-old Kol knows is hunting at the foot of the Great Ice with his brothers. But food is becoming scarce, and without another clan to align with, Kol, his family, and their entire group are facing an uncertain future.

Traveling from the south, Mya and her family arrive at Kol’s camp with a trail of hurt and loss behind them, and hope for a new beginning. When Kol meets Mya, her strength, independence, and beauty instantly captivate him, igniting a desire for much more than survival.

Then on a hunt, Kol makes a grave mistake that jeopardizes the relationship that he and Mya have only just started to build. Mya was guarded to begin with—and for good reason—but no apology or gesture is enough for her to forgive him. Soon after, another clan arrives on their shores. And when Mya spots Lo, a daughter of this new clan, her anger intensifies, adding to the already simmering tension between families. After befriending Lo, Kol learns of a dark history between Lo and Mya that is rooted in the tangle of their pasts.

When violence erupts, Kol is forced to choose between fighting alongside Mya or trusting Lo’s claims. And when things quickly turn deadly, it becomes clear that this was a war that one of them had been planning all along.

So much more than just a caveman Ice Age novel, gripping, eloquent, and exquisitely paced-- a terrific YA debut!
By Christina (Ensconced in Lit)
Let me just say up front that this is usually not the type of book I'd pick up. The thought of prehistory fantasy kind of makes me think of cavemen who go around and bash things in the head with a rock with grunts. How would you make this sexy or appealing? Well, turns out, you have to be Julie Eshbaugh.

I don't want anyone to have the stupid reservations I did, because seriously, no one, including Julie, would want to write or read about something like that. This book is gorgeous and pulse pounding as it builds up to the intense finish, and this unbeliever is a total groupie now.

Ivory and Bone by Julie Eshbaugh stars Kol, who is the eldest son of his clan, who is expected to marry, but the problem is, their clan has no women of marrying age. Enter Mya, the oldest daughter of a nearby clan, who seems to harbor some dark secrets in her troubled eyes, and she has nothing but biting and rude words for Kol, who let's face it, is the nicest guy in prehistoric history. This seems simple, but it's anything but, and as Eshbaugh eloquently and painstakingly takes us through both the past and present, Kol's world and his way of thinking are completely shaken and changed by a single girl.

I loved this book. I actually was reading two other books at the time, that were at the top of my TBR pile, and I abandoned them both to blaze through this book. Eshbaugh takes some really wonderful risks here. First, obviously is the fact it's a prehistory fantasy. I love that even this genre is innovative. Secondly, the novel is mostly written in partial second, where Mya is referred to as "you." This may seem jarring to the reader at first, but the usage of this narrative makes so much sense as it is a story told by Kol to Mya. Stories play such a large role in this novel, and in one particular twist, it takes on extra eerie meaning. I love how Eshbaugh effortlessly weaves storytelling into Kol's emotional journey.

And Kol. This guy... it's hard to even imagine someone nicer. Yes, he's naive, and he has character flaws, but he's an optimist and a good guy at the core. You can't help but root for him, and want to take him for yourself. Hey, if Mya isn't going to come around, there are many of us who will snap him up immediately! That said, Mya is a really fascinating character, and I love that she says so much without even uttering a word. And I won't talk too much about villains, but let's just say that I loved this person in a twisted way and am still thinking about what went down.

Overall, a really ambitious and beautifully written debut that takes a lot of risks and soars with flying colors. Eshbaugh is a writer to watch.

SO unique!
By A Page With A View
This gender-swapped adaptation of Pride & Prejudice set in prehistoric times with mammoths is seriously brilliant.

Basic plot: Kol's mother is desperate to have her sons married since their clan doesn't have any girls their age. Two girls from a different clan show up (Darcy & Bingley) and the familiar story unfolds. The stuff with Wickham turned into something that suit the setting better, but a surprising amount translated really well! The first 80% is narrated like Elizabeth is telling her version of how everything unfolded to Darcy.

It felt like it was set in Canada or somewhere like that based on the description of their kayaks, landscape, and wildlife? The descriptions of everything were so beautifully done and really brought the time period & setting to life. Like Kol measures time in how long it would take an echo to fade or a snowflake to melt, and describes his gangly younger brother as "hewn and awkward like an unfinished stone tool." There are so many cave analogies, too. I don't think I've ever read a book in this setting/time and it was just really cool to see it done so well!

People who aren't Jane Austen fans will still love this because it's an extremely loose retelling. It by no means relies on Jane Austen's plot and you probably wouldn't notice the similarities unless you're obsessed with P&P. I was having fun spotting how the two books could fit, but it really is an absolutely gorgeous story on its own!

Great debut novel from an obviously talented writer
By The Genre Minx Book Reviews
This main plot is about Kol from the Manu clan and his focus on one woman, Mya. If there are any allusions going on it is with the movie 10,000 B.C. The story is told in first person from the perspective of Kol. Roughly for the first three quarters of the book the story is told in a narration from his perspective of his meeting her and following events that led them to where he starts to tell the story. Oral tradition is how history was passed from generation to generation in the past and this narration is reminiscent of that. The romantic in me absolutely loves this because he is so detailed in his thoughts, feelings, and honesty. He holds nothing back and I love how the author was able to keep the narration so well and from his perspective. Truly well written and not just his narration but she does an excellent job of the world construction for pre-historic times but unfortunately for me I kept envisioning 10,000 B.C.

Kol’s deepest desire is for Mya to see him, to want him, to trust him, to be his. Mya is from the Olen clan and there is a bad history between these two clans that almost led to a war five years ago. Kol is unaware of exactly what the catalyst was that led to the tensions between clans but his fascination with Mya is the spark that starts his mind pondering. That spark has opened his awareness to why Mya and her clan are not so open to the idea of the clans aligning and later on explains the poor treatment of his clan.

Seems that clan Olen also have a few skeletons in their closet. Unbeknownst to either clan Manu or Olen there is a third clan, the Bosha, in the background who have a nefarious interest in the extinction of the Olen elder, Chev, and his family. Through deception this third clan is almost able to bring their plan to fruition but things do not go as planned thanks to the bravery of Kol.

For most of the book, I found the whole character of Mya to be a turn off. I wanted Kol to just move on and seek greener pastures. Had I been his friend I would have definitely been trying to push him to be sensible because the girl has issues. In the last quarter of this book my feelings for her started to thaw because as things came to light I began to understand the “why” to her behaviors.

Kol, now there is a guy after my heart even if he is a bit naive. Yes, naive because he is fixated on a girl that is not worthy of him or seemingly interested in him. I found his character to be well rounded and well developed. The imagery that I see when I think back about his narration in the re-telling of his perspective of Mya just makes me love this character.

I felt that the ideas were developed, the sub plots were tied together nicely and that the writing style was original, although there are some issues with the modern voice in a pre-historic setting. The story was pretty slow until the end where the climax was quite tumultuous. Also, I am not against “insta-love” if it is believable to me. Kol was inexperienced with females and given how the story was told he was fascinated by Mya but is that due to lack of previous options or experience? It just came across as “puppy love” to me and was hard for me to take seriously. If he had previously had female options and took no interest and then he met Mya and wowwzza then I would have been able to take his fascination seriously.

The biggest turn off for me was the first person voice. Everything is from Kol’s perspective and I get nothing from Mya’s. There is no sidekick to add to the discussion and bring some deepening of the characters. So I just have his thoughts and feelings on everything but I felt that they were the thoughts and feelings of a pre-pubescent boy. Any seventeen-year-old boy would have some inner thoughts that were not pure and rational. I would have liked to known Mya’s side of things. Her inner thoughts, how she felt about Kol, her struggles and desires.

There was so much good with this story but there were just some issues that I could not get past to fangirl about this book. It is a great debut novel from an obviously talented writer and I am hoping for more in the next book.

Gunmen and Outlaws
By C. Davis
A good book that gives a thumbnail sketch of some of the important Old West gunfighters. The artwork is good and the description of the subjects is a good start for those interested in research of these people but it is not very deep. I found this book to be worth it's price.

When Princess Anja fails to appear at her betrothal banquet, the tiny, peaceful kingdom of Sessalie is plunged into intrigue. Two warriors are charged with recovering the distraught king's beloved daughter. Taskin, Commander of the Royal Guard, whose icy competence and impressive life-term as the Crown's right-hand man command the kingdom's deep-seated respect; and Mykkael, the rough-hewn newcomer who has won the post of Captain of the Garrison – a scarred veteran with a deadly record of field warfare, whose 'interesting' background and foreign breeding are held in contempt by court society.

As the princess's trail vanishes outside the citadel's gates, anxiety and tension escalate. Mykkael's investigations lead him to a radical explanation for the mystery, but he finds himself under suspicion from the court factions. Will Commander Taskin's famous fair-mindedness be enough to unravel the truth behind the garrison captain's dramatic theory: that the resourceful, high-spirited princess was not taken by force, but fled the palace to escape a demonic evil?

From Booklist
In this splendid fantasy about two warriors, a princess, and a demonic plot, the last is against Princess Anja of Sessalie, whom Commander Taskin thinks has been kidnapped. Captain Mykkael thinks there is more to it than that, but because of his race and mercenary background, he isn't readily believed until civil war threatens to break out in Sessalie. Meanwhile, Princess Anja has fled far away, and Mykkael has to flee for his own life, overtake her, enlist help for her, and finally lead her to safety through the monster-haunted terrain of Hell's Chasm. Once a marriage is arranged into a family of potent sorcerers, Anja can see about saving her realm and family, while Mykkael takes vengeance on the demons who, many years ago, drove him from his homeland and love. Wurts is skillful as ever at world-building and pacing, and her background as an artist shows in the kind of intensely visual writing that makes one wish more fantasy were written by artists. Protecting the Princess
By Arthur W Jordin
To Ride Hell's Chasm is a singleton fantasy novel. The Kingdom of Sessalie is a quiet highland realm that longs for an outlet to the sea. The King and Chancellors have arranged a marriage for Princess Anja with the High Prince of Devall to gain treaty access to their seaport and the two royals have fallen deeply in love. The High Prince has returned to Sessalie for the upcoming betrothal ceremony and the town has become a madhouse of wild and drunken celebration.

In this novel, Captain Mykkael and his Garrison troopers have had busy days and busier nights. Mykkael hasn't slept in twenty hours and barely has the energy to tend to his lame knee. His sword shows use and needs a good cleaning if he can find time. The rumors have been varied and fantastic, including a new one that Princess Anja has disappeared. Then he is summoned to appear before the King.

The rumor doesn't have the half of it. The princess has apparently fled on her own and is no longer anywhere in the castle, town or environs. The Seneshal is frantically worried that the betrothal will be rejected by the High Prince, but the prince seems only to be deeply concerned for the princess, urging all possible measures to find her. Commander Taskin of the Palace Guard has men searching all of the princess's old childhood hiding places within the castle, but soon has to agree with Mykkael that the princess is no longer there.

A sorcerer's mark has been found in the castle cellars, but Mykkael knows that it is false, having had experience with the real thing. In fact, Mykkael is almost the only man in Sessalie who knows anything about sorcery and demons, having fought against them on several occasions, and is one of the few survivors of the futile defense of Efandi before it was overwhelmed by sorcery.

Another sorcerer's mark is only too real, killing one of the few other men in the kingdom with the knowledge to defend against sorcery. Other deaths also seem to have been caused by sorcery, even though some of the nobles blame Mykkael and try to force his trial for these deaths. However, the King is well aware of the captain's history and charges him with responsibility for finding and protecting the princess.

This story is a study of a man with heavy responsibilities, horrific experiences, and sorrowful memories. It is also a tale of the love that can develop between a man and woman enduring exhausting and terrible tests of stamina and perseverance. Underlying it all is the threat of demons, bound sorcerers, and their minions.

Highly recommended for Wurts fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of loyalty, persistence, and competence in the midst of great trials.

A rollicking yarn, Wurts at full steam - a must read
By Geoff
To refresh herself after the emotional toll of sending Arithon through Kewar Tunnel in Peril's Gate, Janny Wurts has written this stand alone story of honour, integrity and redemption as Mykkael, the coloured mercenary charged with securing and protecting the safety of the Anja, crown princess of Sessalie, through the physical and metaphorical trial of Hell's Chasm.
The story is deceptively simple - on the day the High Prince of Devall arrives in Sessalie to formalize his betrothal to Anja, Anja disappears and sorcery is suspected. Her intended fiance and her brother both want her found, the King of Sessalie orders Mykkael to find her and protect her. Has she been abducted or has she run? Mykkael is an outsider in both colour and origin and suspicion quickly falls on him, the populace of Sessalie easily led to this conclusion.
With sorcery afoot in Sessalie, Mykkael is forced to re-live his previous failure to protect a princess from sorcerous pursuit. With Sessalie turned against him, Mykkael must master both the real demons in Sessalie and the demons from his past. This book is as much a study of a principled character of robust integrity set under immense pressure as any "simple" chase story.
The world of Sessalie pulsates with the hallmarks of Janny Wurts' writing - self-serving nobility, the seething masses of the general populace, the populace easily swayed by rumour and innuendo and a fear of foreigners.
As a standalone novel, this is a good read and well worth following the trials of Mykkael to the emotional ending. As a tempter for the writing style of Wurts for those who have yet to read the massive Wars of Light and Shadow series, this is an essential starting point for the magic that is the writing of Janny Wurts

Overly long, but give it a chance.
By Seth Merlo
For a single-volume story, Wurts has managed to pack an awful lot of backstory and history into her characters and world. In fact, there's probably enough here to have warranted this being a trilogy. The concept of sorcery and demons, and the means to combat them as described in the book are many and intricate, and not what I would usually associate with a single-volume novel that was obviously a diversion between Wurts' continuing 'Wars of Light & Shadow' series. However, I did appreciate the fact that plenty of time was spent on honing these concepts, as they genuinely do not come across something that was slapped together over a weekend.

There are a few themes running through this novel, with the most glaringly obvious one being the question of race and the acceptance of people based on their talents and abilities rather than the colour of their skin or their upbringing. Unfortunately, it is a theme that is too often tackled in the fantasy genre, and while it may have relevance to today's society, it has been done to death before (though not, it is worth mentioning, necessarily better). Wurts does manage to give an otherwise tired theme something of a twist, in that her lead character, Mykkael, a desert-bred foreigner who has won the post of Captain of the Garrison through skill at arms, is very much a fish-out-of-water, unused to life stuck behind a desk and pandering to the whims of the high-born who live in comfort behind the Highgate. Even the palace guard, no more than commoners (though of better ancestry), have a better social standing than the desert-bred Lowergate Captain. Mykkael's methods and, more importantly, his interpretation of his oath to the crown are what truly separates him from the rest of the populace that he serves among. Wurts chooses to dwell on how Mykkael interprets is oath and obligations, and in doing so, highlights what is lacking when a person, or even a nation, grows complacent and over confident in its own cleverness and security (again, perhaps an issue that is relevant today?)

Even so, I for one do not read fantasy to engage in complex sociological or political issues. I read fantasy purely as a means of escape. Unfortunately, I can't say that `Hell's Chasm' kept me hooked from cover to cover. The first half truly did - I was constantly questioning Mykkael's motives and where his allegiance truly lay, which is a testament to Wurts being able to successfully bring out her theme, and I was also gripped trying to figure out who the traitor in their midst truly was. What also intrigued me in this first half was the relationship between Mykkael and Taskin, the Commander of the Guard, both of whom place a great deal of importance and emphasis on duty and the execution of their oaths, but who represent two very different types of warriors. Once we hit the half-way mark though, this relationship is all but abandoned, and Wurts becomes bogged down in describing the ins and outs of sorcery, the geometry of cold and hot spell lines, and how a sorcerer hosts a demon and creates and maintains minions to do their work. Suffice to say that it's all complicated enough to warrant an appendix at the end to help explain things.

At least 100 pages could have been cut from the novel, just to tighten things up a little more. If it was the first book in a trilogy, then a lot of those pages could have been moved over to the second volume. As it is, by the time I hit 500 pages, I found myself wishing the story would end. The ending itself was both appropriate and a let down (if such a thing is possible). A tribe of people who have really only been hinted at throughout the course of the book suddenly turn up and save the day in two pages (though this is by no means a deus ex machina-style ending), but our lead character Mykkael does get a very decent conclusion. He is worth slogging through almost 700 pages of fairly intense detail to understand what truly makes him tick.

If you've never read Wurts before, then perhaps this would be a decent starting point. It does give you a good indication of the author's style and you only have to read the one volume, which at times can be refreshing after the endless `epic' 20-volume sagas that are currently plaguing the fantasy genre. Worth a look.

Spelling Scots acts not only as a wide-ranging reference book to the changing orthography of Scots, but also as an outline of the active interventions in the practices that have guided Scots spelling. The book shows how canonical writers of poetry and fiction in Scots from 1700 to the present day have blended convention and innovation in presenting Scots in literary texts, and it explores the influence of key writers such as Ramsay, Fergusson, Burns, Scott, Hogg and Stevenson. Introducing an innovative method of tracing the use of key spelling variants in a corpus of Scots writing, the book discusses the implication of this method for promoting wider literacy in Scots.

The Skin-Ego: A New Translation

In this classic work, Didier Anzieu presents a synthesis of his research and proposes a theory on the functions of "the skin-ego". Just as the skin is envelope to the body, Anzieu sees "the skin-ego" as a psychic envelope containing, defining and protecting the psyche. From this perspective, the structures and the function of the skin can provide psychoanalysts and psychotherapists with fertile analogies.

Anzieu's concept of the skin-ego is the answer to questions he regards as crucial to contemporary psychoanalysis: questions of topography which were left incomplete by Freud; the analysis of fantasies of the container as of the contained; issues of touch between mothers and babies; extending the concept of prohibitions within an Oedipal framework to those derived from a prohibition on touching; and questions pertaining to the representation of the body and to its psychoanalytic setting

This new translation of Le Moi-peau is based on the second and last (1995) edition.

Review
'It is wonderful to see Didier Anzieu's The Skin-Ego reissued in English. The Skin-Ego is one of the most significant psychoanalytic texts of the last thirty years. It offers a radical revision of Freudian thinking, closely linked to major traditions in British psychoanalysis but also distinctively French in its philosophical and cultural reach. This sparkling and accessible new translation by Naomi Segal gives Anglophone readers an opportunity to appreciate the versatility of Anzieu's ideas on the skin and on psychical "wrapping", and to absorb his deeply scholarly, systematic and practical style. There is more to French psychoanalysis than Lacan - and this book is one of its most important contributions to the psychoanalytic literature.'- Stephen Frosh, Professor of Psychosocial Studies, Birkbeck, University of London'This new translation is brilliant, and makes the Skin-Ego theory very accessible; now that neuroscience and research on infants and parents have demonstrated how Anzieu was right in his ideas of an early influence on narcissistic disorders, this new translation will be very useful for young therapists who didn't have access to this kind of manual of psychoanalytic treatment of difficult patients. Naomi Segal, who knows so well Anzieu's developments on the origins of the capacity for thinking and its roots in early experiences, manages the task of the translator wonderfully, and captures the essence of this very original theory of containment and psychoanalytic technique.'- Christine Anzieu-Premmereur, MD, PhD, Assistant Clinical Professor in Psychiatry at Columbia University and Director of the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center's Parent-Infant Program
