Last self-published book for me

One of the problems of self-published books tends to be lack of editing, and this book suffers from it. Ms. Quy needed to have input from an objective third party editor with experience to improve this book by eliminating repetition, removing errors and using a greater variety of examples from Ms. Quy's life besides a few years in her childhood and her first few years (of 24) in the FBI.

As for the message, reddit.com users have a synopsis called TLDR for long posts. The TLDR for Secrets of a Strong Mind is "work hard and don't give up". Hardly a new message, albeit presented in a unique way.

Oguchi, longtime designer of Japanese gardens and author of more than 18 books on the subject in Japanese, offers English speakers both an overview and practical knowledge of this easily recognized but to many Westerners mysterious art form. Oguchi describes the Japanese garden's relation to architecture from the ancient era to the mid–19th century, tracing its evolution from the lavish hills, ponds and waterfalls of early estates to the inward-turning, abbreviated and abstracted gardens of urban townhouses. He calls the guidelines of Japanese garden design naturalness, studied tastefulness, and harmony, tempered by flexibility for site conditions, current needs and desires, and self-expression, and presents essential design devices such as asymmetry, miekakure (hide and reveal). Most of the book gives concrete details on how to design and build a garden for the home or small business, using as examples the author's designs for restaurants, homes and his traditional teahouse. With precise instructions and illustrations for building typical elements such as bamboo fences and stone bridges, the book gives Americans all the information they need to create authentic Japanese gardens. About the Author

Motomi Oguchi was born in 1947. Since he began his career as a garden designer, he has created about 400 Japanese gardens for homes, temples, and public buildings including the Schloss Schoenbrunn in Vienna and his current project, the Shizen-An spa/retreat on the north fork of Long Island, NY.

His co-author, Joseph Cali, wrote The New Zen Garden published by Kodansha International.

Misleading title

This is not really a how-to book. The author shows, in detail, how to recreate some gardens that he created for clients. While this is interesting, you really can't create your own Japanese garden using this book.

Not as good as the reviews led me to believe

Although this is a nice book, it is not as good as the reviews led me to believe. The attractive photos focus on primarily a few gardens that the author himself has made. In at least a couple of cases, the gardens were built where cars had been parked. I kept wondering where the cars went. I am sure the owners did not get rid of them.
The book has been praised for telling readers how to build elements of the gardens. This is true for a few fences and such in the featured gardens. However, I am sure other books in my collection have more information about building more things.

After buying and reading many books on design of Japanese gardens and being dissatisfied because of no detailed help, this book was refreshing. This book bridges the gap between concept and digging a hole to plant a tree. Is well worth the cost.

About the Author
Gerald Corey is Professor Emeritus of Human Services and Counseling at California State University at Fullerton. He received his doctorate in counseling from the University of Southern California. He is a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology; a licensed psychologist; and a National Certified Counselor. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Division 17, Counseling Psychology; and Division 49, Group Psychotherapy); a Fellow of the American Counseling Association; and a Fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. Both Jerry and Marianne Corey received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Mental Health Counselors Association in 2011, and both also received the Eminent Career Award from ASGW in 2001. Dr. Corey was given the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award from California State University at Fullerton in 1991. He regularly teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in group counseling and ethics in counseling. He is the author or coauthor of 15 textbooks in counseling currently in print, along with more than 60 journal articles and book chapters. In the past 40 years Jerry and Marianne Corey have conducted group counseling training workshops for mental health professionals at many universities in the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Belgium, Scotland, England, and Ireland.

Marianne Schneider Corey, a licensed marriage and family therapist in California, is a National Certified Counselor and a fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. She has been actively involved in providing training and supervision workshops in group process for human-services students and professionals. She also facilitates self-exploration groups for graduate students and continues to conduct training workshops in group counseling with her husband, Dr. Gerald Corey, in various countries. In 2001, the two received the Eminent Career Award for distinguished and major contributions to the field of group work by the Association for Specialists in Group Work.

Cindy Corey is a California-licensed psychologist in private practice in San Diego and on the faculty at San Diego State University Community-Based Block Program. She received her doctorate in psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology, Los Angeles.

Patrick Callanan is a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice in Santa Ana, California, and a National Certified Counselor. In his private practice he works with individuals, couples, and families. Patrick is on the part-time faculty of the Human Services Program at California State University at Fullerton, where he regularly teaches the internship course. He also offers his time each year to the university to assist in training and supervising group leaders, and co-teaches an undergraduate course in ethical and professional issues.

Very good book that allows easy reading. Dr. Corey makes in clear in all his books that the reader should develop their own way of handling consumers. Professionals and students should find this book outstanding scholastic material moving into the realm of counseling. There is not substitute for proper ethics.

INSTRUCTOR'S EDITION

This book came with a great deal of tape and "quality resold books" stickers on the front and spine. The book did not look like the picture posted. I peeled off the stickers and found it to be the instructor's edition. However, there does not seem to be much of a difference between the instructor's edition, and student edition. And it was a good price, and came in good timing. Just a warning that it is a bit of false advertising.

About the Author

Dr. Dennis Goldstein is a senior physicist with Polaris Sensor Technologies, Inc., following a 28-year career in electro-optics research at the Air Force Research Laboratory. He is a fellow of SPIE and AFRL, and has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona and University of Florida. He also teaches short courses for the Georgia Institute of Technology. In addition to Polarized Light, Dr. Goldstein has published more than 70 papers and technical reports, and two book chapters. He holds six patents.

Response to Sean Murphy comments on D. Goldstein's Plagiarism

Sean Murphy says:

The copyright page of the 2nd edition clearly states, "The first edition was published as 'Polarized Light: Fundamentals and Applications,' Edward Collett (Marcel Dekker, Inc., 1993).

This 3rd edition by Goldstein is clearly an authorized version based on Collett's earlier version. It just has a different title.

Mr. Murphy:
In 2002 Marcel Dekker contacted me to write a new edition of Polarized Light (my 1st edition, 1993). It was my understanding that the book had gone through 5 printings. They offered me a 10% royalty and I asked for a better rate for an updated edition. Marcel Dekker told me that 10% was the industry standard and they would not increase the royalty. The negotiations ended.

A year later an eminent colleague of mine contacted me and told me that he had received a new book on polarized light written by D. Goldstein as a 2nd edition. He then discovered that it was my book! The only significant difference from my book (1st ed.) was there was a new title, a new cover, and my name had been removed.

I was no longer able to find the contract for my book and so there was very little I could do. I could have possibly sued Marcel Dekker but the cost of a copyright lawyer was prohibitive. The result was that I had lost a major part of my life's work.

Then, in early 2011 I discovered that D. Goldstein had written a 3rd edition. It was practically identical to the 2nd edition.

Finally, Mr. Murphy, I never authorized and I do not know who did authorize the printing of the 2nd or 3rd editions. And lastly, I never received any financial compensation or royalties for either the 2nd or 3rd editions.

A good book, but completely plagiarised.

This is a very useful book (albeit full of typographical errors) that covers all aspects of the elementary theory of polarisation of light.

I am rather surprised at the gall of this author, however. This book is identical, almost word for word, to very many chapters in the book on polarisation by Edward Collett. Yet no acknowledgement is made by the author of this fact. He presents it as if it were his own creation. This strikes me as plagiarism of the worst kind. I have worked through many chapters and have not yet found any section or chapter that differs in any way whatever from Collett's earlier work. Goldstein appears to reproduce it word for word, even down to the typographical errors.

Are you not ashamed of yourself, Goldstein? This is gross dishonesty on your part. At least put Collett's name on the book as first author and then describe in the preface your contribution to enlarge the original work. To do anything less is utterly despicable.

Excellent book. I particularly like that every chapter concludes with an action plan. I read the book not so much to lose weight but because I suffer from IBD and evening snacks cause the most problems. This book is not only for those who would like to shed some pounds, but for everyone interested in eating healthy. Also, food really affects our sleep and it is amazing how little changes in your diet can have such a great effect. You can start incorporating the advice immediately and even though some tips seem obvious it really works. I will share this book to my friends.

Wanting to change for the better starts with yourself. The author did a good job giving the basics on how to simply be healthy starting at night. Eating slow and taking things slow is what I usually forget since I cram all other things I forgot during the day, which in turn, does not give me a healthy lifestyle. Want more tips? Grab a copy of the book. It's worth the read.
